Owner description: If you want to find your mummy, or, for that matter, Buddha or shards of old pottery, look for this museum in the heart of the University of Pennsylvania campus.

Working in museums, I may be biased, but this place is how every museum should be. Imagine a "museum" in your mind, the image that should come up is this type of place. Some absolutely extraordinary collections. This place is way underrated, which is nice in that there aren't millions of tourists swarming around. But you can definitely spend an entire day here alone. Also, the museum cafe is very good and affordable, a pleasant surprise.

I was visiting Philly with a friend and although I have visited Philly at least 20 times, I had never been to this museum . . . . there are so many things to see in Philly. . . . . . I was amazed. We spent almost 3 hours and could have been there longer but our parking meter would have expired. If you are interested in archaeology, the history of mankind or anything having to do with the history/development of man, THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU.

If you have an inquiring mind, you will enjoy. A "Must See" place to visit in Philly.

Finally persuaded my family to come with me. They loved the exhibits. Too much to take in at one viewing. Very diverse presentations. Kids loved the mummies. Me too.

The Penn Museum displays artefacts from several ancient civilizations: Egypt, Rome, Etruscan, Ur, China, Mesoamerica. Much of the museum's collection was dug/discovered by Penn-sponsored archaeological expeditions at a time (late 1800s to early 1900s) when places like Egypt and Iraq still allowed archaeologists from Europe and the U.S. to take home some of the things they found. Today, most countries that have remains of ancient civilizations (Italy, Greece, Egypt, etc) are pretty strict about letting their priceless cultural heritage leave town, so you simply could not amass the kind of collection today that the Penn Museum's explorers did a century ago. If you are interested in archaeology, you will not find a more fascinating museum in the US. Much of the building was built during the 1920s and as gorgeous as it is, it has been only minimally updated, which means there's little air conditioning, uneven lighting in some galleries and an overall sense of faded glory. The text on some of the exhibits clearly needs updating. I find the Penn Museum charming and quaint, and my daughter loved the Egyptian mummies, but if you are looking for the latest IMAX movies and high tech exhibits, this is not the place for you.
