“Great museum for those interested in antiquity, religion, mummies.”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a museum that has a lot of offer, but it's not overwhelming. I recall coming here as a boy to see the mummies and being spellbound. There's still stuff that's great for adults here, w/ some strengths being their Egypt and Southeast Asia sections. I've also enjoyed their Greco-Roman artifacts. I think it's well lit (unlike, for example, the American-Jewish Museum), well organized, and has good descriptions of what you're seeing. I think families with young children could really enjoy this place and folks who just find history, culture, religion fascinating. One drawback, it's not particularly close to many good restaurants, which tend to be about 5 blocks away, although it has a serviceable restaurant inside.

“Surprisingly good!”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The museum doesn't look that big from the outside, but it's surprisingly big and very well organized on the inside! They have a lot of different exhibits and everything is well displayed. You don't expect the museum to be so good, but it actually is! It was a great surprise.

“One of the best archaeological museums”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

the Penn Museum of Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania is one of the finest museums of its type in the country. Since it was responsible for so many important excavations, the quality of artifacts is superb. Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Ancient Near East are particular strengths. Some installations, such as that of the Greek vases, and the Roman collections, have been renovated, but other areas still need revamping. The building, which had many additions,is rather confusing, but their are wonderful things to be seen throughout. The range of civilizations covered is extremely impressive. If you have an interest in archaeology, don't miss this one.

“The whole history of the cultures of the world!!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

My father and I went to this museum on a day trip to Philadelphia. We went on Museum Day Live! so it was free for us. This museum has so many different cultures housed in it. I remember for instance the Native American culture having many different artifacts such as bowls, pots, and clothing. There were even replicas of and actual human body parts. It tells about the history of people. I remember some of the cultures being the Americas, Caanan& Israel, and Ancient Egypt. In the Ancient Egypt exhibit, there was what appeared to be a sphinx, as well as very large collumns. I am definitely coming back again!!

Right across from Franklin Field, the museum has a great collection. Close to Mutter Museum too if you are headed there.
