“We would definitely return to this hotel”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Our visit to this hotel was because we were attending a wedding. The bride researched many prime location hotels in Philly before choosing Sofitel. It was her conclusion it offered everything an out of town guest could want.

Our Sofitel experience was everything we anticipated and more. An employee opened the taxi door with a greeting and smile. The front desk people were efficient and friendly. The bellman was so helpful explaining how the elevator worked. Great security system in place.

Our room was clean and tastefully furnished. Larger than most big city hotels. Comfy bed. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious and updated. Nice amenities (L'Occitane). Fluffy towels. The maid was friendly and helpful. Keurig coffee systems in the room is a huge plus. Biggest surprise....free wifi in guest rooms. Three cheers for Sofitel implementing this great feature.

We dined twice in Chez Colette. Once we ordered a la carte. We also had Saturday brunch. Both meals were high quality and delicious. Wait staff very courteous.

Hotel has a great location to see the city. Lots of restaurants in the area. Very safe location.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Philadelphia. We stayed at the Sofitel Hotel which was minutes away walking to public transportation, good restaurants, shopping and within about a one mile walk of all major attractions. The hotel is a Pet Friendly. The staff was very attentive and professional. Beautiful big room, the bathroom was nice marble and decent sized with separate shower and tub. We eat breakfast at the Chez Colette hotel restaurant. The breakfast was delicious. The restaurant offer buffet style or a la carte breakfast. The hotel has valet parking or you can park your car around the corner at the public parking(about 30$ /day). Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Sofitel.

So this is my review of a third hotel in the Rittenhouse Square area. I have previously reviewed Palomar and the Rittenhouse. Next time I will review the Parc Rittenhouse.

If your driving and parking a car in the city, get ready for the traffic and delays. Getting to this area by car at rush hour is extremely trying and will involve some delays during workday hours. Luckily, Sofitel has a small drive through area to valet park at check in and any time during your stay. Unlike the Palomar--see my review for the parking horror. If your driving pick Sofitel over Palomar just for the ease and convenience of the valet lark area alone. You'll thank me.

The best part about our stay was that the room rates were priced right! I felt I got a great value for what we got.

Service was great, as expected. Upon check in, the two cribs I pre-ordered were already in my room. Employees very nice, helpful and courteous. high Grades there. The location and proximity to Rittenhouse Square is the reason to be at this hotel/area in the first place. see my other reviews for the area. We and the kids chased birds in the park on the square several times and there was an outdoor art exhibit during the weekend of our stay.

The only real negative is that the rooms are somewhat dated. Carpets need to be replaced both in room and in hallways--not threadbare but just getting stale design wise and have some high wear marks. Also the weekend was bustling with two weddings on site? At certain times in evening there was alot of people in the public areas of the hotel but inside my room it wasnt loud, so we were happy.

we had a 1 bedroom suite in which all the rooms were arranged in a circular fashion and the kids kept running round and round. The interior doors dont lock--not even the bathrooms though they are wood french doors (frosted glass). There was contemp art on the walls so the rooms were nicely appointed with some extras from Bose. We did ask for a small fridge to store baby food and milk, which they didnt accomadate but did allow us to empty the pre-stocked sodas and booze from the mini bar. That worked. Room service was good.

though they do this hokie French thing, saying "Bonjour" to you and serving gruyere cheese on the omelletes instead of cheddar. Just seemed a little foo foo. If you like the French theme there is a Le Meridien in the city too.

Rittenhouse area is fantastic for shopping, restaurants, walking around the city, parks and nightlife. There is even a great running or biking trail on the riverfront about a mile away which stretches for miles past the art museum, the river and on. just ask concierge.

I stayed in September 2012. This was approximately my 5th stay here in the last 5 years. The staff was very friendly and courteous. The location is unsurpassed in Philadelphia, as it is in the heart of Rittenhouse Square, surrounded by restaurants, the park, shops, city hall, etc. I stayed in a suite, which was very nice and spacious. It had high end finishes - eg - Bose radio in bedroom, Bose entertainment system in living room, marble bath, separate bath/shower, etc.. My only complaints are: 1. the furniture is getting older and has several chips; 2. the soap products are too fragrant for my personal taste. Overall a great experience in a fabulous location.

Excellent location to begin one's exploration of Philly. Located close to most of the tourist spots but not within them. Many excellent restaurants nearby but be aware that most close quite early. This part of Philadelphia seems to shut down early...well, actually, most of this area became a ghost town after 10. There is South street but that just seemed like a watered down version of a Mardi Gras style vomit-fest frat boy heaven.

As for the hotel, $40/night parking was excessive. Found parking down the street for $17/night. Check-in was efficient and friendly. As someone arriving with just a backpack and without a fancy suit or gold watch I would have liked to been acknowledged more by the valet and the bellmen with a "hello" or simply a smile. I feel there was a slight lack of friendliness because there was a perception of no tip. As the first face of Sofitel Philadelphia I see this as a problem.

The room itself was very satisfying although there was an awkward table and lamp arrangement around the lounge chairs. If I had stayed longer I would have had it removed. Large comfortable bed with magnificent comforter and linen. The dark furniture and accents gave the room and classier vibe. Also, there were nice touches in the bathroom like cotton swabs and cotton pads for makeup removal. A divide for the toilet gave privacy and the glasswork and tile work was of nice quality. The room did not have a nice view. It was on the 5th floor and I suspect there are no good views until a much higher floor. It didn't not bother me since we were not in the room much and it was a quick stay. I'd suggest asking for a higher floor if you don't want to look at a parking structure or side of a building.

Overall, a nice visit to Sofitel Philadelphia despite the minor issues I highlighted for the sake of future readers.

Bonjour,

Thank you for your comments. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and were able to take advantage of our great downtown location and what it has to offer. We are also very pleased that you found our unique So-Bed comfortable and found our large marble bathroom and its toiletries convenient. We understand that not all guests are interested in valet parking and would prefer a self-park option which we have many of nearby and are always eager to assist guests in directions to different options. We are disappointed in your welcome experience as you first entered our hotel and will most certainly share your review with our Front Office team to assist us in improving our service. Excellence is what we strive to be known for; therefore your feedback is extremely important as it enables us to constantly improve our hotel and to provide a memorable experience to our valued guests. Let me start with the location. I couldn't imagine staying in a better area of Philly. Everything is walking distance. Right around the corner, we discovered my favorite new restaurant in Philly, Hipcity Veg. There is a definite hustle-and-bustle energy to Center City, but it's not hectic or overbearing. At night, especially, when everything lights up and the restaurants are buzzing, it is a real pleasure to walk around. Arriving at the hotel always felt like walking into a serene, peaceful environment. The customer service was very pleasant. Everyone greeted us with a smile. I felt secure -- the elevator required a key to reach any of the floors. The hallways were clean and nicely decorated. The room was a good size and although it faced the parking lot, it still had enough of a view of the city for my taste. But the real winner was the bed. One of the most wonderful, plush, relaxing beds I have ever slept in. I've stayed at the Westin a number of times and their beds are billed as "heavenly," but honestly this Sofitel's beds were on another level of heavenly. The bathroom was spacious, with a separate shower and tub. And although double sinks would have been an extra nice touch, I'm not complaining! There were frette robes in the closet. Overall, a very pleasant experience that I look forward to repeating!
