“Great location”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

Our room (Independence) was excellent, large & comfortable complete with a full sized refrigerator, full stove and microwave and with a roomy bathroom. The breakfasts were on the skimpy side, but the location is great.

Room Tip: We only saw the one we were in (Independence) & would happily have it again.

My husband booked our reservation based on a recommendation of a friend. I had no idea it was a B&B. We traveled with our adult kids age 21 & 22. This was our first time at a B&B and it was a nice weekend experience. There are two bedrooms on the third floor, the Heritage & Liberty. We booked both and shared a bathroom in the hall with our kids. La Reserve is a town house built in the 19th century. The living room ceiling is at least 20' high with a gorgeous carved crown molding. The decor is elegant yet comfy. We didn't spend any time at La Reserve other than basically sleeping and a breakfast Sunday morning before we left which was very good. Made to order omelets, French toast, eggs Benedict, cold cereals, juices & coffee. The neighborhood reminds me of the West Village in Manhattan yet cleaner. We parked our car in a lot 2 blocks away. The B&B is 3 blocks from Rittenhouse Square. Plenty of choices to dine & shop. Good food, nice staff, conveniently located and nice accommodations. I would definitely stay again & recommend to others.

Lovely building with good rooms and in a great location, but some of the aspects that we expect from a B&B were absent. The much vaunted weekend cooked breakfast was not worth the wait. Not all staff were particularly friendly. We asked for but got little useful information about where to go and how to use the local public transport. Some of the information provided about where to eat was out of date. Could do better.

Thank you for your feedback. It disappoints me when guests don't enjoy a great experience at our B&B.

Because of our seating arrangement and the large volume of weekend guests, including invites to outside guests, instead of a traditional B&B breakfast, we feel that offering a typical menu that includes a choice of eggs cooked any style, with an option of fresh vegetable ingredients, thick french toast, pancakes with fruit, sausage links, hickory smoked bacon, and homemade hashbrowns works best for our establishment. To spice up the general menu, we also offer different tempting specials every weekend day. We are always open for suggestions and improvement.

Our staff members are fairly informed of Philly transit, and if not all destinations are familiar, we have reliable resources to assist us. So I'm truly sorry, you were not efficiently assisted. I will address this.

There are 160 eateries in the Rittenhouse district of Center city alone and asking where to eat is a challenging question. I personally am horrible at giving this advise since I have so many favorites, giving way too many options that only makes deciding more difficult. We do offer on our website links to local restaurants, in addition, we have a menu binder that we try to keep updated, with menus, addresses, contact numbers, and star ratings.

There are not many choices of Bed and Breakfasts in and near Center City, and it was a treat to find one that had such a convenient location and was actually very nice inside. The feel is similar to many British and European hotels. Overall it was a great experience!

La Reserve B and B is really well located, just a few blocks from Rittenhouse Square. The decor is old world, like a somewhat gracefully aging dowager, The parlour is pretty though we had no chance to use it. Didnt have many opportunities to interact with the innkeepers but we had no problems or serious complaints. The Saratoga suite is at the back so has no view and is dark, but spacious and otherwise comfortable. The fold out sofa bed definitely needs to be replaced! Uncomfortable to sleep on. The breakfast could most certainly be improved on... Cold boiled eggs, cold muffins and yoghurt from a supermarket.... Not exactly appetising or imaginative. Even if they dont do the hot breakfast on weekdays, could have had a better spread of fruit (so much great summer fruit in season!), cheese, homestyle preserves, cold cuts..... The breakfast happens around a dining table for 8 or 10, so its intimate, and not pleasant and in fact awkward if the other diners are not friendly. The guests while we were there were mostly seniors. Wi Fi also needs to be pumped up. But all in all, cozy and comfortable.

Room Tip: The Saratoga Suite is dark with the windows in the bedroom placed at ventilator level and no view at...

Thank you for your review, we appreciate all feedback. Our Saratoga suite is located in the back of our B&B and faces an alley; not much to look at. The room was just recently re-designed by our designer, intentionally to impress a cozy and sophisticated look. The chairs in the bedroom and living were re-upholstered with a fabric our designer picked out, and currently curtains are in the making. This room is popular for those you are looking for complete quietness. For our guests who like this look, have complimented the ambiance. I personally like the brighter rooms located in the front with large windows that overlook our front street.

Thank you for pointing out the lack of comfort regarding the mattress of our pull-out couch. This couch was recently purchased any you are the first to bring this to our attention. This issue will be addressed.

Our continental breakfasts are a typical American continental. Our muffins, scones, and other pastries are homemade by our staff members on property and are served warm, but towards the end of our breakfast i can imagine that they may chill a little. In addition, our boiled eggs are cooked daily and again may chill towards the end of our breakfast service. I am very sorry your experience and will monitor this. We have tried seasonal fruit, but doesn't seem to be too popular, sometimes are taken by guests for afternoon snacks, otherwise, spoil because of it's short shelf life. So we decided to stick with fruit with longer shelf life, apples, oranges, and bananas. We do not make our own yogurt and yes are purchased at the supermarket. Our continental also consists of different breads, bagels with cream cheese, and cereal.

Our dining room is intimate, and is visited by many personalities, Some look forward to our breakfast and mingling with other guests and some don't. We always offer our large parlor for another room to dine in, for those who prefer their breakfast in refuge.

I hope that you will give us another try and next time stay in one of our front suites, I think you would enjoy these rooms better. And please if you have a breakfast request, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.

Stayed several nights. Loved the smell of cookies, the parlor, the cleanliness, the service. Disappointed in the fairly dark room, window to upstairs neighbor, little privacy. Room doors had big gap above floor, I could hear everything in the next room, maids discussions in the morning.. Guest discussions in the evening...ended up sleeping with ear plugs. Staff was friendly and the neighborhood pretty upscale for the most part. I walked everywhere in the historic vicinity and loved that part.

From the housekeepers to the chef to the guy touching up the paint on the banister, everyone we interacted with at La Reserve was kind and accommodating. We had to arrive earlier than expected to check in, and with short notice, staff cheerfully assured us that our room would be ready -- as, indeed, it was. Someone had even turned on the A/C well in advance.

Thoughtful details really added to the experience: chocolates on the pillow, bottled water and make-up removal towelettes on the dresser, and binders containing information on the inn's history as well as tips on where to eat nearby and what to do. The charm of the building was undeniable. In addition to being clean and comfortable, the rooms, stairway, and parlor, furniture and wallpaper, and general vibe, testified to the B&B's lengthy and fascinating history as part of Philly. (That said, if you're not into the whole shabby chic thing, if you'd prefer elevators & a fitness center to quirk & personality, this is not the place for you.)

Factor in the reasonable price, hearty breakfast, and great location, walkable to just about everything we'd come to Philly for, and we'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
