Owner description: This museum, located at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, is one of the finest medical history museums in America. The Mütter is a 19th century style cabinet museum displaying medical artifacts such as anatomical specimens and medical instruments. Marvel at the beauty and strangeness of the human body. The Mütter is home to many notorious exhibits including Harry Eastlack's skeleton, the Megacolon, the Soap Lady, and the Hyrtl Skull Collection. It's also the only place to have pieces of Einstein's brain on display. Admission to the museum also includes admission to the Thomson Art Gallery, featuring medical-themed art, and the Benjamin Rush Medicinal Plant Garden. A visit to the Mütter is unforgettable...prepare yourself to be disturbingly informed.

Anyone in the medical profession should enjoy this museum. There's also something here for history buffs. The place is filled with skulls, skeletons, brains, and various other body parts. Einstein's brain is located here. There is information about the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln and Garfield. Body parts of John Wilkes Booth are even featured. There's the normal and abnormal in this place. One section shows how corsets, used in past centuries, damaged women's bodies. There are medical instruments dating back a century or more. Photos of amputations and medical procedures are posted along the walls. There's a gift shop for those who want to purchase memories of their visit. This is a fascinating place to visit.

This is a very unusual place, but extremely interesting. My wife and I are both in the medical field and we both really enjoyed the exhibits. My 10 year old found the exhibits very interesting and had many questions about some of the things he was viewing. Even my 17 year old who is not easily impressed enjoyed the museum. No photography, which is understandable, but I would love to have been able to take some photos or video here. It is not a huge place. I think we were there for about 2 hours to see all of the exhibits. Not for those who are easily disturbed by such things, but worth the trip for anyone interested in the medical field or forensics.
