The Gables is a beautifully restored mansion with beautiful guest rooms, 2 large common areas and fabulous front porch. All areas are furnished with beautiful antiques. Our only regret is that we didn't have enough time to spend just relaxing at 'home.' The area is in a quaint, historic part of The Univ. of Penn. Restaurants are within walking distance, and the neighborhood is wonderful to walk through. The trolley stop is right on the corner, making access to downtown Philly and the sports complex easy. We highly recommend!

I highly recommend the Gables as well as the Blue Willow Room. We enjoyed the charming table and chairs set in the sun drenched turret space as well as the decor and crisp linens. The gas fireplace also set the mood for a romantic retreat away from home. The Gables was a perfect fit for myself and my husband, who was glad for our private bathroom, cable TV, and wireless internet. The hosts are friendly and helpful and the breakfast was hearty and sufficient, although we would've liked a bit more to choose from on our second morning. Meat is not served at every breakfast, but should be. The only annoyance was the clanging of the radiator. The B&B is convenient to the city, but we chose to drive instead of riding the trolley which I heard was fun. We were thankful for the midnight snacks that were available and glad that the B&B smelled nice, not too much potpourri as a former visitor had mentioned.

The Gables B&B is a restored, late Victorian, house in the University area of Philadelphia. The property is an eclectic mix of old and new and offers a refreshing change from the homogenous and impersonal rooms provided by the chain hotels. The house has been lovingly cared for and contains a wealth of antique, reproduction and period pieces. Houses of this age will always have a few rough edges and although these will be nothing significant you should expect sticking doors & windows or maybe a few knocking pipes. Do not be put off by rooms that are without en-suite facilities as these have large, private, attached (down the hall) bathrooms. Fluffy robes are provided for your very short walk. Rooms boast all the usual facilities (plus a host of useful extra touches) you would expect but (obviously?) do not include any catering facilities.
The breakfasts provided were varied and will certainly be different from the ubiquitous donuts, pastries and muffins usually offered. I saw homemade peach crumbles, cheese & spinach pies, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, muffins, cereal, waffles etc. Breakfast is taken on the large dining table and is a good way to meet fellow guests.
The area around the Gables is safe and was regularly patrolled by the highly visible, university security staff. As the Gables is west of Schuylkill expressway (I76) is not really walkable to the "main" downtown area. There are some local shops and restaurants (mainly along Baltimore Ave) although the tram stops virtually at the door of the Gables.
The Gables gives you the feeling of staying in a private historic house and will be guaranteed to grow on you.

I only stayed one night in the Egan room. The room was comfortable and nicely furnished. The house was lovely with floors of beautiful wood with patterned designs. If you like old houses, you will love exploring the details here. The neighborhood was fairly quiet and seemed safe.
My only complaint would be that breakfast was not very good. Everything was out when I came down to breakfast (quiche, yogurt, fruit, coffee, juice, cereal), including burnt muffins. I don't think it's necessary to serve breakfast to guests, though it is nice, but why put out food that doesn't look good?
I'd stay here again because the house is very nice, but I'd eat breakfast at one of Philly’s great restaurants.

TheGablesbb, Owner at The Gables Bed and Breakfast, responded to this reviewResponded January 27, 2018

Good afternoon,

My name is Cesar Gonzales and I am the new owner of The Gables. We took over last October 2016. Since we took over, we have installed custom draperies in all the rooms to address the issue you listed. We also have added individual a/c heat units in each rooms. We also have upgraded all rooms to have queen sized beds except for two rooms where we still have two twin beds for those who wanted to have separate beds. We also serve breakfast now made to order and pride our breakfast offerings. Please read our guest reviews since we took over.

We hope that you will visit us again when you are in Philadelphia.

Have a great year!

Regards

The Gables Family

Wake up to the sound of birds chirping, warm sunshine filling up your room through large lace curtain-lined windows, to the aroma of freshly baking bread and muffins; and smell the brewing coffee downstairs. Gaze out of your window onto the little garden outside and watch the squirrels trapezing across trees.....
That's The South Room at Gables Bed and Breakfast, Philadelphia, PA in mid-October. But, I wish the inn-keeper would get the lock to this room replaced/redone. It is an effort to lock this room. The bathroom door also has a problem and does not close at the first instance.
The reviews you have read are reliable coz I chose this place based on them and am simply delighted by Gables.
I spent five days at the Inn and the location was just perfect - within a mile of the University and connected by a trolley that ran every five minutes.
Tip - the trolley accepts only an exact change of $2. But, you can also buy tokens from bookstores around university city. These work out cheaper since they bring down the cost to a little under $1.50 a ride.
If you took a cab back from the university to Gables, it would cost you about $6. So, you know how close it is.
The only flip side to staying at the Gables (like most B&Bs) is there are no restaurants within walking distance. There is a Salt and Pepper Deli which is a five minute walk. But, I am not too sure what they have.
Warren the inn-keeper is warm and friendly and has done a good job decorating and maintaining the victorian home.
The breakfast was sumptious and delicious. I am vegetarian and the inn-keeeper was accomodating enough to cook up vegetarian breakfast recipes on all days.
There is a fridge stocked with apples, water, milk, meat, jams n jellies n spreads, soda, etc. there is a microwave too.
The dining room is cozy and the parlor has a couple of pianos. And, there are a lot of books and magazines all over the inn.
He has a cute and friendly little black poodle called Oscar who seemd to have taken an instant liking for me from the moment I walked into Gables! I am not a dog person but I loved the way this Oscar rubbed himself against my legs and tried to hug me the moment he saw me!
A couple of problems -
The toilet paper gave me an infection - I came back with an itchy infection and the doctor said it was a fungal infection.
Also, the Inn has an overwhelming fragrance of apple cinnamon. Perhaps we should tell Warren to go easy on the pot pourri and get fresh, clean and disinfected toilet rolls.
