“Very good deli in bustling Reading Terminal”
Reviewed March 28, 2010

Very good, velvety pastrami on rye and a decent potato knish. Price was reasonable. Seating in Reading Terminal can be a bit of a nightmare on weekends, especially around lunchtime, but perseverance pays off (Hershel's offers a half-dozen bar stools at its counter, but they were naturally all taken at 2:30pm on a Sunday).

“Pastrami on rye mustard cole slaw, Lipitor on the side please!”
Reviewed December 10, 2009

Went 9 Dec. Great sandwich. Central seating is right in front of the stand. We also got to hear a flutist. Although the noise from the lunch crowd drowned her out. The entire market was worth the trip.

“Great pastrami and reuben sandwiches....”
Reviewed July 23, 2009

My BF is from NY and is picky about pastrami and he loved the sandwich at Hershel's. The reuben I had was also very good. The corned beef was very lean and tasty. If you are in the mood for a great deli sandwich, head down to Hershel's.

“Best Deli Food I've Had In Years!”
Reviewed December 3, 2008

Wherever we go, we look for good delicatessens with the old favorites we love, and we found it in Philadelphia! Inside Reading Terminal Market, a huge space with many food vendors and other types of stores, is Hershel's--a small space where you can get bagel and lox (nova OR belly), noodle kugel, whitefish (chub), latkes (potato pancakes), corned beef, pastrami, Reuben sandwiches, knishes, great soups, and on and on! Everything is delicious: just as good as you remember. (We went there three times in three days! Ohmigod!) If you go early, you can meet Alex, the charming cook who will take care of you personally. It was like going home again. Lunches are a mob scene, so allow time for standing on line. But it's worth it. Five Stars Plus!
