“Great (big) sandwiches”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

Reading Terminal Market was suggested as a good place for lunch by our Big Bus tour guide. We wandered around the market, having a hard time deciding what to get. We chose Hershel's East Side Deli. We both got Hershel's Special sandwiches (basically reubens without the cheese). Like all good delis, they pile the meat high. The bread (marble rye) was fresh and flavorful. We got sides of cole slaw and potato salad. (I wanted to try the latkes but they apparently make them fresh and I didn't want to wait the 8 minutes or so it would take to make them.) Everything was delicious. We were only in Philly for one day but already we're ready to go back to try other offerings at Hershel's.

“Big Reuben Sandwich”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

Hershel is a Jewish deli in the Reading Terminal Market which is across from the Philadelphia Convention Center. We ordered a brisket Reuben on marble rye and a pastrami on seeded rye for lunch. OMG, they piled tons of meat on the bread. The sandwiches are BIG! They are very tasty. If you are a big meat eater, you are in heaven! It was more crowded that usual because there's an international conference being held in town. A lot of the conference attendees were in the market. The lines at various food stands were quite long. But the people behind the counter at Hershel were fairly efficient. We did not have to wait too long. Once again, because of the crowd, it was kind of difficult to find seats.

“Hershel's Deli”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2012

This is the absolute best deli we've visited! My husband is born and raised in New York and after having a meal at Hershel's Deli in the Reading Market, we are both in agreement this is simply Heaven when it comes to Deli food! We travel all over the country for business and we are going to dream about coming back to Philadelphia just to eat here! Try the Pastrami absolutely the best!
Knishes were wonderful. The Owner let us try their awesome Red Velvet Cake.. Not too sweet..Delicious. Now if we can only get them to open a Deli in Hawaii we'd be simply thrill to have a regular meal from Hershel's Deli! Thank you for making our last day in Philadelphia a Memorable one! BTW you will love the owners of Hershel's they are the neatest couple!

“Good pastrami, great matzoh ball soup, okay knishes”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

This is more of a stand than a restaurant. No seating, beyond the group seating in the middle of the food hall - tough with little kids, large groups or elderly. Food was good, not great. Bread was not fresh and we were the early. Sandwiches were tasty, soup was perfect, knishe were greasy. Service was efficient, but not friendly. This is best with 2-4 adults. Menu doesn't have a lot of choice. We had hoped for breakfast, but it was sandwiches only. No coffee.

Read my Reading Market review and add Hershel's Deli as a must visit.
The Pastrami sandwich is top notch. Great kanishes. On my way to Philadelphia, a fellow from Philadelphia who sat next to me on the airplane recommended Hershel's Deli. He was right on ! If you like Jewish Deli ...you will love Hershel's
