On our 3 week trip down East Coast this was undoubtedly the best hotel we stayed in.Lovely wooden floors, beautiful furniture and a very large bathroom made for a home from home experience. In addition our breakfast(+newspaper)was delivered to our room at time requested.
Centrally located(next to subway),it is a gem

Consistently greeted by helpful, friendly staff here, as well as a selection of hot beverages and water in the lobby 24-7. Small selection of breakfast goodies delivered to the door every morning helps start the day off. Location is central and accessible by foot to many points of interest in the city. Room was well appointed and comfortable. No complaints other than some housekeeping missteps (small stains on towels and bedding), which were quickly fixed by the staff. We couldn't quite get the tv to work properly (we should have been out exploring, anyway) and the in-room coffee lacked (good thing for the coffee in the lobby!).

Enjoyed my stay here in early December, although arrived whilst the block was having a power outage, so couldn't actually figure out how to get into the hotel :-). It was however very refreshing to stay in a hotel room which didn't look like every other hotel room I've ever stayed in. The room was generally clean, although the window ledges in room were surprisingly dirty, so lacking a bit of attention to detail. Couldn't access television at all, as no signal. Breakfast was delivered to the room each morning, and was fine. I think the hotel restaurant was being renovated.

Room Tip: Request a room that doesn't border the front of the hotel, as there's a lot of nightlife out...

Great location, the nicest staff going so far out of their way. I have never experienced this before. Super clean, fun and different kind of room and the most comfortable bed. Not your typical hotel. We felt as if we were staying in a friend's home. Will come back again.

Room Tip: upper floors

I had every intention of getting this review in in a timely manner but didn't. The road somewhere is paved with... :).

The traveler who made mention of the leaky ceiling due to rain could have been us. We had an end room looking out on 12th. The room was large, the hardwood floors squeaked (not complaining, just saying) and there was a strong damp smell...more on that in a minute. The beds were fine although the duvet fabric felt like burlap. I think it was raw muslin maybe? No problem as it wasn't going to be up around my face anyway.

Make no mistake, no window keeps the auto traffic and people noise out on a Friday night. Additionally, the window leaked. Not a little leak. Not a new leak. I stepped into a huge puddle that had pooled between the two beds. Wearing flip flops my feet went out from under me, I caught myself just before disaster. We traced the water back to a seam around the window. Front desk guy did bring us towels to put down but the house was sold out so no room to move to. We were not offered, nor did I insist on, a rate reduction. We made the best of it. Plumbers came the next morning took a look and said nothing they could do, we piled up more towels for one more night.

While the bathroom is large the shower stall is one of those fiberglass inserts squeezed into a corner, you can barely turn around in it. Still got clean, just giving the traveler an idea of dimensions.

The continental breakfast is as described, simple yogurt, Special K or other boxed cereal, piece of fruit all put in a small basket and left outside your door...and in our two nights stay never within 40 minutes of time requested. (You are asked to write your delivery time on the sheet of paper you hang outside your door) Limited K Cup machine in your room.

Would I stay there again? No, and not because it isn't the luxury boutique it purports to be but because Center City in Philly is such an easily walkable city I think I will look around and perhaps find a real diamond in the rough.

Room Tip: Seriously, if it is raining ask to see the room first and check around the windows and look at the c...

We visited here in November, and chose this place based on the reviews in Trip Advisor. It was clean and comfortable. We didn't have any noise issues. I must say that the staff was really pleasant. However, we were a little disappointed with the breakfast at the door. The first morning there, our breakfast arrived an hour early, and had been substituted for a couple of other items on the card. For the next morning, I circled the time on the card. It actually arrived quite early again while we were still sleeping (with a knock on the door)! Eek! Otherwise, we were pleased with the location. It was within walking distance (several blocks - have your walking shoes) of places we wanted to visit.

We live in the Philly suburbs, and booked a one night stay at the Independent as part of a night in the city for my husband's birthday. Our room when we initially arrived was really cold -- we assumed because the heat had been turned off and it just needed to warm up. However, after about 45 minutes, it hadn't warmed up at all, so on our way out to an afternoon event we mentioned it to the front desk. When we returned, they had arranged to move us to a new room, as the heat was apparently not working. The front desk attendant was very nice and responsive, handled the matter quickly and was very apologetic. The new room was nice and cozy, and had a better view to boot. The beds were comfy, the furnishings very nice, and the design and furnishings throughout very stylish looking. The hotel is very nice by any standards, and a real steal at the price. The staff was all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delivered to our room -- just continental, but decent, and free. There were apparently complimentary drinks in the lobby in the evening, but we were out on the town the whole night. It's well located too -- in Midtown Village/the gayborhood, and walking distance to Rittenhouse square or old city. It's right next to a patco entrance, and just two blocks from the orange line subway. We will absolutely be going back again. This may be our go-to hotel for Philadelphia visits from here on out.
