The Independent Hotel was a relaxing and enjoyable experience. We never had the feeling of being nickel-and-dime'd, yet they took care of almost everything... They offer free wifi, coffee, tea, water, newspaper and wine/cheese in the evenings. Free breakfast delivered to the room (Breakfast was nothing fancy, but it was just what we wanted.). Parking was easy and cheaper than most parking in Center City. The location is right in the middle of Center City... we could walk to just about everywhere.

Most importantly, the staff is polite, helpful, and keeps the place clean.

I definitely recommend this hotel.

This is a lovely boutique hotel and we enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We stayed 2 nights at this hotel on a recent family trip to Philadelphia.

Pros:
1. Great location! The hotel is in the heart of the city and we found Philadelphia to be a beautiful city that is adorned with historic landmarks.
2. We got an excellent room, which had a living area and pull-out bed downstairs and a bedroom upstairs. The room was very clean and well furnished.
3. The free Wi-Fi connection worked very well and there was also a complimentary computer / printer in the lobby.
4. Water, coffee and tea were available 24 hours a day in the lobby, and we really like hotels that provide this service. It is so convenient to not have to make coffee in the room and just get it from the lobby whenever required.
5. The complimentary breakfast delivered to the room was nice too, though the options were limited.
6. Plenty of restaurants in the vicinity.

Cons:
1. The breakfast offered limited selection.
2. Very small shower. It would be impossible to give a bath/shower to an infant or toddler.

If we do return to Philadelphia, which we plan to as 2 days wasn't enough, we will definitely consider staying in this hotel again.

You never know what a hotel on Locust Street would be like and where you would park if you did like it. We missed the parking lot on the first pass but after floundering around on the one way streets we did get a spot for $15/day and easy entry and return. Hard to believe. The hotel was great, the elevator to the 2nd floor was a change and the receptionist a gem. We had found a loft for us and the lower level for the grandkids and their mother. No complaints except for the light fixtures which should have been fixed long ago, even Ben would agree on that point. For us grandparents the 8:00 p.m. free wine and cheese "party" in the lobby was just great; even met some nice out of town guests who loved to chat. It was a short walk to "Buco" for an Italian feast and not too far to the City Tavern where Ben and his colleagues dined. Both eateries were reasonable and walkable, great with kids. The kids (12 and 14) main interests were the DUKS and the Eastern State Penitentiary, what an amazing spot and a surprisingly interesting facility for kids and grandparents. The six of us agreed, We loved The Independent, the staff, the facilities, and the ability to explore the city. The wine and cheese treat was exceptional! Oh yes, breakfast was delivered to your door.

Room Tip: The loft is great if you need a room for 6 and what peace and quiet for the two of you.

During a recent visit to Philly, my daughter and I stayed at the Independent Hotel based on previous reviews. It was perfect for us. It was clean and comfortable and a great location.

Staff was beyond good, what is a real important factor to me. Location is just perfect, in the city center. Room was clean and nice, the complimentary breakfast is very generous.
The only reason why no 5 stars:
- the location itself is noisy, cant blame the hotel for it, that's the price being there
- the bathroom light switches were not working
- you need to log in every time again and again to wifi (after losing connection for a while)

I would recommend to anybody to stay there but only if not being too sensitive to street noise.

Stayed at the Independent Hotel for the second time in a year (as an international traveller on business) and was delighted with my stay again. Originally found this hotel on Trip Advisor and the recommendations are on the mark. The hotel is nice and small so one gets personalised service that you would never get in a chain hotel. The rooms are fantastic, the beds comfy, and the amenities modern. As always, free in room Wi-Fi and a customisable continental breakfast delivered to your door each morning are key reasons why the Independent Hotel is so great. The staff are friendly (without being obtrusive) and provide great local recommendations. The hotel is within walking distance to fabulous eating (and shopping for those who want that) and is in a safe area. Would definitely come back a third time to stay and also have no hesitation in recommending to others.

Room Tip: Some rooms can get a little street noise depending on where your room is located. Really depends on...

Our family of 4 stayed one night at The Independent in Philadelphia. A friend of ours recommended it. What a unique hotel! It's definitely not your typical chain hotel...no fancy lobby or big swimming pool, but it had everything we needed! The room was very comfortable and had all the amenaties we needed, including a Keurig coffee maker! :) A complementary breakfast was delivered to our room, the beds were comfortable, the room was clean and very tastefully decorated, and the Phila. neighborhood was safe (and fairly quiet during the night). If I had to make any suggestions, I would recommend different bed comforters. The fabric looked "pilled", making them appear unclean (which I would imagine all hotel comforters are, anyway). Also, there was a beautiful 8-foot-or-so mirror in the room which was not attached to the wall. Since we had a 4- and a 7-year-old with us, we were very concerned that it could easily be knocked down and broken, as it was just leaning up against the wall. Other than that, it was a great place to stay. We would definitely stay there again!
