Spacious, well appointed room with luxury amenities in an interesting renovated structure. The rooms will vary -- this is a boutique hotel. #207 was large, with high tin ceilings, exposed brick and lots of character. Comfortable bed and bedding. Excellent shower with two heads and strong water pressure. Excellent HVAC. Wine and cheese evening reception during the week is a wonderful touch. Breakfast offers healthy options (fruit, juices, Greek yogurt, cereal), which you select the previous night -- and you specify the time. It arrives to your room on time in a basket. Location is wonderful for exploring Philadelphia. My one night business stay was insufficient. This hotel makes me WANT to come back to Philly! And I will surely stay at the Independent.

We stayed at The Independent for five nights and found it excellent on all fronts - convenience, rooms, and personnel. It's within easy walking distance from Independence Hall, Rittenhouse Square, and City Hall, with a metro stop just outside the door for longer distances. The room we had was spacious and well-appointed, with a bathroom you could dance in (if the mood strikes) and a very comfortable bed. The breakfast is a little redundant & not necessarily up to the buffet types in the chain hotels, but it was plenty of fuel for the day. The desk staff was very friendly and helpful, especially with dinner suggestions and reservations.

The Independent is located within convenient walking distance of public transportation, many attractions (museums, historic district, etc), great restaurants and shopping. We certainly did not miss having a car. The desk staff (especially Colin) was exceptionally gracious and helpful. The wine and hors d'oeuvres in the evening were abundant and it was fun meeting other guests - both Americans and international. Coffee and hot water/teas were provided throughout the day. Our room was generously sized, quiet and clean. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. Our bathroom was also very clean and good size although the toilet was a bit loud when flushed. For the first time in a long, long time, there were enough towels provided without asking for more. Warning to women, the toiletries provided do not include hair conditioner. We booked the pay in advance rate, which was a great value. We look forward to staying here again.

Room Tip: We were on the third floor at a far end - 309 I believe. It was great.

Dear Lasemuse, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience during your recent stay at The Independent. I shared your wonderful review with Colin and our team. This is the type of experience that we want all of our guests to have. The gratification that we all feel when we surpass guests’ expectations is the greatest feeling in the world. We also look forwarding to seeing you again at The Independent on your next visit to Philadelphia.

This hotel was booked for us by a friend as we were all attending a graduation ceremony at the Academy of Music on Broad Street, and the hotel was an easy walk away. We only stayed one night. The first impression is rather strange, as you enter a tiny, drab grey lobby and face the door to a restaurant. As you walk in, there is nothing welcoming you as a guest to the hotel upstairs. We just took a chance and used the elevator and found the hotel lobby. Personally, I enjoy the ammenities of a larger hotel....coffee shop, restaurant, news stand.....everything I want is in the same building. So I would not have chosen a smaller hotel. However, since we were staying only one night, this hotel was fine. The hotel is located on a commercial street....nothing pretty or quaint or secure about it..... so I was thrilled to find out that the security at the hotel was wonderful. In the evening, the elevator can only be used by those who have a key card, and the lobby of the hotel (which is very small and directly off of the elevator) is staffed all night. We stayed on the fifth floor, a corner room. We had very little luggage, so I am not sure if they have a bellman or anyone to help with luggage. Everything about the hotel seemed as though it was just rennovated. We had a large room, very, very clean. We had two queen beds, very comfortable. The linens were soft and clean. The room was modern in design, painted in blue, but not overwhelming. Air conditioned. There were beautiful hard wood floors, lovely area rug.....a coffee center (only had two cups, we had three people), refrig, microwave, (you had to get ice from the lobby)....a desk area with free internet, a large closet, large dresser with flat screen that swiveled...two large windows with blinds and heavy curtains with pullbacks...plenty of lighting....the bathroom was very large and nicely appointed, very clean, large vanity, several mirrors.....heavy duty fan !!!....but no makeup mirror and the lighting around the mirror was not strong enough for that purpose....very clean shower, no tub. Plenty of towels and products. Overall very inviting and spacious. There was a continental breakfast offered (very limited choices) and would be delivered to the room....we did not use that service because the card had to be on the door by 10pm and we forgot to hang it out before we left for the evening. The hotel lobby had coffee, tea, fruit out when we arrived, a few chairs and a TV and newspapers, but if you don't order the breakfast there is nothing but fruit in the lobby. As far as parking.....use the parking GARAGE that is located on the same street.. ..drive to the top floor first, for it is the only floor where YOU can park your car and take your keys, ( we got the last space at 3 in the afternoon) the other floors the attendant will keep the keys....do not use the lot next door to that...we did not feel comfortable with the attendant there!!! The hotel will stamp your parking ticket for a reduced rate. BUT....the parking attendent in the garage tried to charge the full rate even though we had our ticket stamped....some mumbling excuse to get a few extra dollars for himself! Be stern and do not let them take advantage of you!!!! This hotel is in a great location to visit Philly...some things within walking distance and it is always easy to get a cab, especially if you walk up to Broad Street. The hotel is also close to Rittenhouse Square....a lovely part of Philly for restaurants and shopping. If you are looking for a boutique hotel...this hotel is lovely, and the price is reasonable for a large city hotel.

Location of this hotel at 13th and Locust is perfect and lots of great little restaurants (Barbuzzo, Jamonera, The Corner, El Vez, etc) nearby (especially on 13th Street). The hotel seems more European in style than the many large chain hotels in Philadelphia. We stayed twice over the course of a week in a King Deluxe room and a Queen Deluxe room. Both rooms were large and well appointed; exposed brick, wood floors, area rug, flat screen TV, etc. We especially liked the double-headed showers in the bathroom with tin ceilings. The Independent has a nice wine and cheese hour during the week starting at 6:30pm and delivers a breakfast basket to your room in the mornings. Coffee and tea (and some fresh fruit) is available in the main check-in lobby. There's also a coffeemaker in the room. The Wall St Journal and USA Today were also available for free when we stayed there. The only minor annoyances were the bathroom light switches always turning on a fan when not wanted and the towel hook by the shower (only one hook and the towel always slides off of it). But these were really minor inconveniences. Be aware that the check-in lobby is not at street level but on the 2nd floor.
