Owner description: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

We enjoyed the visit. What we did not realize was that the prison is big and the exposition is versatile and interesting, so we did not allocate enough time for the visit. One and a half hour was not enough for all the narrated tour and to see everything.

I had a high school band that went to the Eastern State Penitentiary. They divided them into groups of 25 and had a guide walk them through and talk with them. What an amazing tour this was for them. Totally different than the walk through old Philly, or the tour of Gettysburg. Truly unique and architecturally, historically, sociologically significant. It was late Nov, so it was cold (no heat in the pen), if it rains there are places where you will get wet. There are only porta-potties so better to go ahead of time. There is a gift shop. It is mostly wheelchair accessible except for a couple of areas.

After doing my Philly research, the Pen was what I expected. I thought it was very cool. I enjoyed listening to the self-controlled audio tour. The audio worked very well, and it was easy to operate while jumping around from site to site. Our twelve- year-old son was disappointed; he was hoping for more interactivity.

Super interesting! Lots to explore! Friendly staff! Audio tour was helpful and part of the $12 fee. The best 12 bucks I spent the whole trip!

Interesting history and little known. Ben was a fantastic guide. Very knowledgeable. Easy to get to on the PFLASH.
