Owner description: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

Lots of history packed into this run down old penitentiary. Admission price gets you an audio tour.
FYI to future vistors: the only bathrooms on site were the porto kind.

Don't miss this attraction nestled away from the pulse of center city (for obvious reasons--it was a working prison for over 140 years.) Quirky history at its best. Take the self-guided tour and try to catch the "haunted house" in late September through early November.

We loved this part of our vacation. We still talk about the tour and what great things we saw. The place is huge and the pictures we took were beyond fantastic. The information throughout the tour really got you into the time when the penitentiary was first built. Well worth the money we spent!

They did a great job and it really gives you a good feel for prison life. What was most interesting was seeing the chapel for religious services.

Great information about the US penitentiary system, great narrated audio tour by Steve Bouscemi, and great photo opportunities. Plus it's within walking distance from downtown. I had been looking forward to going here for years. It did not disappoint.
