“Great Vallue in Center City”
Reviewed August 31, 2009

The physical plant is what you would expect from a mid-range hotel in a major city; no complaints, but nothing extraordinary, either. Rooms are clean and everything works and appears to have been renovated fairly recently. Rooms are oddly shaped, but this isn’t a negative. I was in a “corner queen”, which contained a sofa bed. The room was spacious and would suit a family well. Has a large fitness room, equipped with a good number of state-of-the art cardio machines, a few weight machines and free weights. Also has a small indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and racquetball court (of all things). There is also a deck/patio, which is a bit odd since most people do not travel to Philadelphia to lie about in the sun.
I had only one meal (breakfast) at the restaurant, which was very good (nice, reasonably priced buffet). I did not use the business center. The gift shop is open from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm daily, which are very extensive hours.
Location is great; on Broad Street in the theater district only a block from the Kimmel Center and a few blocks from City Hall, the Ritz-Carlton and the Bellevue; several blocks from the Convention Center. An entrance to the Walnut-Locust subway station is a half-block away, which is especially convenient if one is attending an event at the sports/arena complex.
The staff were all friendly and efficient.
All-in-all, a fine stay and a very good value.

We stayed 2 nights in Double tree hotel. We booked corner room. The room was renovated, clean and large room.
We really satisfied it.

However we were very disappointed with the service they provided.
Our flight was 9 o'clock at night and we asked frontdesk staff that if we can take a shower before the flight and they kindly offered us.
We had to use 5th floor sauna/gym but the shower room was locked.
To use the shower room, we needed the key but nobody told us about it.
One staff were there and asked if he can open it. He told me that we can not use it because we already cheked out.

Another problem.
We booked a shuttle bus to get to airport.
The bus did not come on time and we had to get a taxi from the hotel.

I stayed at the Doubletree in downtown Philadelphia for three nights in mid-August while on a business trip. In general, the nicest aspect of the hotel is the location - squarely in the middle of downtown Philadelphia within walking distance of many restaurants, etc. There was really nothing negative about the hotel but little to offer in the way of positives either.

The lobby is small but fairly well appointed. Check-in was quick and easy. The hot cookie was a nice touch. The rooms appear to be have been remodeled within the last few years. They are decorated in a "contemporary" style - not my taste but at least the room was not run-down. My room had an odd shape - long hallway opening into a modest bedroom area. The room and especially the bathroom have nice ameneties.

I ate only one time in the hotel restaurant - for breakfast. The meal was ok, fairly typical for hotel fare. I did not try room service but they have an extensive room service menu.

The pool and hot tub area were not very impressive. The hot tub looks like something you would have on the back of your house - complete with a wooden deck around it. Very out-of-place in an urban hotel. The pool was very small and does not give the impression of being well maintained. A water pipe feeding the pool was barely hanging on with some duct tape. They have a nice but small exercise area.

The business center was small and you have to pay for the internet usage after 15 minutes of "free" time. I find this irritating - the nearby Park Hyatt offers free internet usage. The conference rooms were very comfortable, nicely appointed and easily accessed from the elevators.

I nearly rated the Doubletree an overall 4 stars, but the hotel just doesn't quite rise above mediocre - average in most categories.

This was an overall pleasant experience. I can't say enough about the staff. They were outstanding and very accomodating. The room was decorated nicely and very clean. We had a lovely view of Broadway Street. The only downside was the room was not very insulated from sounds. It became very noisy at times when people were in the hall. At night the lighting from the hall glared from underneath the door. Thirdly, to have access to free WIFI you had to go down and sit in their lobby which wasn't very convenient.

Pros: Excellent location, subway entrance northbound right outside hotel entrance, two free bottled water (no refills), comfortable bed, nice decor, free wi-fi in lobby. Floor designated to Hilton Honors members w/morning newspaper during weekdays. Restaurant/bar closes at 1am, free chocolate chip cookies, small but limited convenience shop in lobby area.
Cons: Poor customer service, housekeeping service not at all thorough, internet charge $10 for in-room service, ice maker in poor operating condition, room walls very thin. No refrigerator in room. Couch and desk chair fabric itchy. Sofabed & chair uncomfortable.
The reasons:
1st night - Called customer care to complain that the bathroom fan was inoperative. Was told someone would come up to check. Waited and waited. Finally went to front desk because no one came. Clerk checked with someone in the back office and came back saying that there are no bathroom fans in the bathrooms. Customer Care should have followed through with at least a phone call instead of keeping me hanging.
Ice maker outside door; awoke to people getting ice at odd hours throughout the night thereby resulting in a poor night's sleep.
2nd day - Complained about noise and wanting to change room, front desk clerk said to return after 3:30 pm. Returned at 4:30 pm and another clerk, Carmen, questioned why the other clerk did not take care of me then. Could not offer any better room at that time. Carmen was very empathetic but unfortunately only saw and dealt with her that one time (she was the best of all). She advised me to check next day if still noisy. Found that putting a bath towel on the floor of the door entry helped muffle the noisy ice machine.
2nd night - Toilet not flushing, almost overflowing. Called Customer Care who promptly sent maintenance within 15 minutes. That night, while attempting to use the blow dryer that was hung in a bag hanging on a hook in the back of the bathroom door, found someone's panty in the same bag. Gross and disgusting! It was a good thing I packed some wipes and disinfectant. Left a note for the housekeeper regarding the incident.
Rest of days in house - Noticed the housekeepers do not do a thorough job cleaning, vacuuming. Did not re-stock appropriate amount of towels (needed to request more from housekeeping via note to housekeeper), had to remind to vacuum as crumbs were still on floor from previous day. Newspaper I placed in the recycle container was left on the ottoman. Ice bag not replaced one day. Noticed zipper on unlock bag was moved to a different location after returning at day's end. Nothing missing but housekeeping's integrity in question.
Overall: Poor representation of Hilton's standards. Very disappointing.

I got a great deal on this hotel through Priceline and stayed here with two friends. We had a corner room on the fifteenth floor. It wasn't huge, but it was comfortable and clean. There was a huge wedding going on the weekend we stayed there, so it was fairly noisy, but nothing unreasonable. Free wireless is available in the lobby, but we were able to pick up wireless signals from neighboring buildings in our room.

The location can't be beat--it's an easy walk to Rittenhouse Square, Reading Terminal Market, the convention center, South Street, and the historical sites. There's a subway station nearby for the Broad Street Line, which goes to the sports complex, and though parking is $22 a night, we were able to leave our car in the garage until midnight of the day we checked out.

I'll definitely consider staying here again. It was comfortable, conveniently located, and a great value.

Enjoyed this hotel for a weekend stay with family. Walk to the station for train to the airport wasn't far so we didn't need the parking garage. We stayed in a corner room with an extra window and the view was great. The room was very clean with new fixtures and comfortable beds. The pool was also clean and not crowded and a nice temperature. There are good restaurants nearby and it is an easy walk to many attractions. Also enjoyed the breakfast buffet in the atrium restaurant.
