“Thanksgiving Weekend at the Marriott Philadelphia”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2008

Stayed at the Philadelphia Marriott for 3 nights for an Irish Dance competition....much better than our stay the previous year. Our room was clean and well maintained. Room service was surprisingly affordable for this type of hotel....noted that at least one of their restaurants had closed down since the previous year. Keep in mind that the famous Reading Terminal Market is just across the street, lovely diners, food vendors, etc.....good food and affordable, especially for a family of 6! Some trouble getting our room on arrival day, they were not prepared to check in large crowds and rooms were not ready until past check in time....but they did ramp up the staff to maintain the hotel the rst of the weekend and to make sure there were enough people on hand to make check out much better. The Valet and Parking staff were absolutely wonderful, helpful, accomodating, patient and quick....something very, very rare at a large city hotel that does convention business.

Stayed here for one night for a quick getaway and really enjoyed it. The location is great (it's about 15 minute walk to Independence Hall), right across from City Hall. Got a free upgrade (ask if you're Elite Rewards member) to an Executive room on the top floor that was very nice. Service was excellent; all of my requests were met promptly and with a smile. Would definitely stay here again.

This place is huge, with more than enough amenities right in the hotel and everything you need within a short walking distance.

The bedding was amazingly comfortable. The room was a very good size. The lobby was very nice. Hard to go wrong chosing this place.

We were able to get it on Priceline and were treated just the same as any guest.

It is right next to the downtown Macy's and there are many wonderful restaurants in the nearby neighborhoods.

I would say the only drawback would be that it is expensive to park in the general area. Hotel parking is $42 a night. It is what you would expect for a downtown hotel, but still spendy in my book.

First the good: This hotel has a great location, especially if you are participating in the Philadelphia Marathon. In 2008 the pre-marathon expo and pasta feed were located in the next door convention center, didn't even need to go outside to get there.

Also good, Good friendly service from vallet, front desk and concierge. And the room was very nice.

At this point they would have received 5 stars from me, but:

The internet costs $10 per DAY, come on, every flee bitten hotel on the planet gives free internet to customers - minus 2 stars
Parking costs $36-$41 per DAY, really? parking tickets are $41 I could just park on the street - minus 1 star. I wouldn't have minused a star if it had been $15 per DAY.

Come on Marriott, you did everything right to earn your 5 stars here, but lost on the basics that customers expect. Get back to the basics and you could be great.

I chose to stay here for a professional conference that took place here and in the Convention Center, and I wish that I had picked some other place.

On the first day, I checked in and asked if they had received a package for me, and I was told they had not. It contained items vital for Day #2 and Day #3, and I had made arrangements to be SURE that it would be here. On Day #2, no package, so I contacted Shipping & Receiving directly, and was told no package had arrived, so I had to make do without the items for my meeting on Day #2. On Day #3, same story, and in this case, to replace the contents of the missing box, I had to reproduce 120 copies of a document (in color) from a computer file, and I chose to do this in the hotel's Business Center.

That was another bad choice. The computers were either horribly outdated or purposely slowed down to increase income from per-minute charges, and the mouse was so old and dirty that it was difficult even to select a menu item. I finally succeeded in making the copies, at great expense. At least the Business Center is open 24hrs., so I was able to use the time between 5 AM and 7 AM to get this done, instead of wasting this time on something like, say, sleeping.

By Day #4, the box was no longer of any use, so of course this was the time that someone chose to inform me that the box had arrived 6 days earlier, and had just been sitting around unaccounted for. Despite this error, the hotel was unwilling to reduce my charges for reproducing the reports (>$500) in their Business Center.

On the afternoon of Day #2, I returned to my room at 3:15 PM, and it still hadn't been cleaned. What's worse, the door had been propped open and left that way, so that anyone could walk in. There were maids and maintenance staff in the general area, but none of them saw me walk by and right into my room without needing to use my key -- great security!

Someone HAD been in my room, though. They had opened up the TV cabinet and moved the remote control from where I left it, so apparently they watched some TV. They had moved some towels and toiletry items around in the bathroom, but not really cleaned anything. And they had opened my closet and left it open. Not sure what they were planning to clean in there, or if they were just nosy.

The room was noisy and not particularly clean to begin with, the staff were largely surly and unhelpful, and in general the experience was inferior to what I'd expect for a tenth of the price in a Third World Country. There are plenty of options in Philly, so I strongly suggest that you avoid this one!

Taking a second trip to philly today, and i'm headed straight for the Marriot! The hotel was really nice, the staff was beyond helpful - from the check in clerks to the parking attendents! The rooms were lovely, and they even made special drinks for us at the bar! I found the location to be quite generous, being that it is situated in the midst of everything! Not to mention having your car stored securely (we actually walked everywhere). I've stayed in many of the finer (and much pricer) hotels in philly, and if it weren't for the great rates on the rooms, you would think that you were in a much more expensive hotel. I think this is where my husband and I will be going each anniversary from now on! Try it on - you'll love the way it fits!
