Delicious bread from Sarcone's (which is the BEST Italian bread in the city) and fresh meats, cheeses and lettuce, tomato and onions, extra virgin olive oil and some very interesting and delicious specialty sandwiches make this a true South Philly hoagie destination. It's just a tiny little shop where you pick up your sandwiches and take them elsewhere or, in good weather, sit at one of the few tables they have set up outside.
The fried tomato special is not at all a traditional hoagie but is a definite must-try! The fried eggplant with sharp provolone is great for vegetarians and the tuna special is also delicious. Their traditional italian antipasta selection is also excellent. If you go, try the long hots - they are so good and really hot!
Chickie's delivers and has a catering menu (I've had them supply the food for two parties and it's a very economical way to feed a whole bunch of hungry hoagie-loving people). And the staff are very personable and friendly and give good ordering advice if you do have a large group to feed.
One tip - if you're going later in the day, call ahead to make sure they are still open because they close when they run out of fresh bread - which is a testament to the freshness of the food and tells you just how popular this place.
Chickie's definitely has the best Hoagie's in South Philly!
