We stumbled upon Fort Casey when driving around Whidbey Island. It is an interesting place to visit, especially if you had young kids who want to run off some steam. You can wander around the old fort area, walk up to the lighthouse and enjoy the view. I wish we had been there on a day when the guided tours were happening, there is probably much more to this place than we could learn just walking about with a brochure.

This is a great place for a family day trip. Large open areas for kite flying, picnics, and general kid's play. The fort is fascinating and history buffs will spend hours exploring. You will need to climb some steep ladders to get up close to the guns, but other areas are accessible from ground level. You can even get on top of the ramparts by walking up the grassy slope on one end or the stairs. You need a WA. Discover Pass ($11 /day or $30 /yr.) and you can buy one at the park if you don't already have one. There is a free guided tour available in the afternoon at 2PM. The light house is easily accessible for no extra fees and you can go all the way to the top. Views are amazing so bring a camera.

Climb on the battlements, walk down to Juan de Fuca passage of Puget Sound, fly kites in the wide open spaces, hike the trails, watch the deer - there's lots to enjoy at Fort Casey State Park.

Fort Casey has wide open fields with the occasional wandering deer & rabbits. The old fort with its cannons and tunnels is fun for the history buff, as well as kids. The Lighthouse has a small museum in the bottom. And of course the stair climb is dizzying. All this against the beautiful backdrop of the ocean with cruise ships, tug boats, and the Keystone Ferry rambling through. Go in the summer months if you want good weather! (You can also stay overnight at the old Admiral's Quarters which is now an Inn.)

Fort Casey is a wonderful place to explore. Bring the whole family and have a picnic and walk on one of the many trails that will take you to the beach or into the trees. Bring your kite as it is windy most of the time. On a clear day you can see the Olympics, Vancouver Island and even Mount Rainier. Watch the ferry as it docks and loads and unloads cars. The cannons are impressive as is the lighthouse.
