The Inn at Penn Cove
Ranked #13 of 13 Coupeville B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 12, 2013

The Inn at Penn Cove is a bed and breakfast housed in an historic two storey house on a well-treed corner lot on Main Street in Coupeville, near the Island County courthouse and jail. It is a quiet and charming location in small-town America. The house has a Thai restaurant on the main floor. The property includes guest rooms on the second floor, a room off the patio behind the restaurant, and another, smaller building.

We were warmly welcomed by the managing couple, who turned out to be a wealth of local information. We got the patio room. The patio is surprisingly secluded, being surrounded by the rear building and mature apple and pear trees. Our room was accesses through a pair of French doors, you know, made mostly of windows, locked with an ordinary door lock. We were showed to our room and the manager bade us farewell.

There were a few items of concern. The room was nice enough but felt like your parents' rumpus room. The carpet was dirty. The adjoining room was a combined bathroom and coffee making area, which was fine except for the cobwebs in the spaces around the shower. We heard noise from the back of the restaurant for some time.

The patio has a motion detector which activates a flood light. At 11:30 p.m. this light lit up the profile of the man trying our door - an unexpected and frightening experience.

The breakfast part of the bed and breakfast was out-sourced in the form of two gift cards for the Knead and Feed restaurant and bakery, located at the bottom of the street. It is a very good choice.

This is not your usual Bed & Breakfast, where you sleep in a decorated bedroom and hang around in the living room or on the porch, sipping sherry. The rooms are upstairs, above a Thai restaurant on the main floor. Btw the food at the restaurant (The Cove) is very good. We ate our dinner there both nights during our stay, and even returned at 9:00pm for some dessert (mango with sticky rice in sweetened coconut milk).

But this review is about the B&B, which we found to be very charming and comfortable. We stayed in the proprietor's favorite room, the Blue Room. The window has a nice view of the large tree just outside, the room is spacious, the bathroom is nice and large with a high sink and plenty of horizontal surfaces for stashing your stuff, the queen bed is very comfortable, and the ceiling is high, (as the Inn occupies an old restored house, several of which line the main street in Coupeville and many of which are B&B's). Although the breakfast was not provided in the B&B (the Thai restaurtant is not open for breakfast), we were given vouchers to use at a bakery cafe 3 short blocks away. The food at the cafe was great!

Oddities to mention, but none important enough to fret over: the bathroom sink has hot and hot running water (you have to wait a bit for the right-side tap the "cold side" to cool down); the coffee maker lacked coffee or tea packets, and the proprietor (a very nice man) of the B&B is in another location, but just a cell phone call away. We will be back, partly because we love Thai food, and partly because this was a very nice place, at a competitive rate, in a great location. In fact, almost perfect for the big art festival that was this weekend.

Room Tip: Bring a 2-prong AC adaptor as the outlets are old style.
