While in Wyoming, we visited Devil's Tower. The rock formation is incredible. It looks small from far but when you get up close, it's HUGE. Very cool for fans of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Definitely a site to see and travel around the 1.3 mile trail at the base. Be sure and ask about the story of HOW the tower came to be.

Hint: The children being chased by a bear.

One can not visit southern Montana and western Dakotas without capturing this one of a kind site in northeast Wyoming. You can certainly see why ET landed there :)

Devil's Tower, the first national monument, was the star of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". A magma extrusion that was once below ground level, it now rises nearly a thousand feet above the eroded soil. It is unique. There is an easy 1.3 mile trail around the base so you can experience views from all angles and, incidentally, enjoy the native pine forest. Photographers: bring the zoom lens for a variety of rock formation photos plus you may see climbers on the face.

Easy in and out, take your time, walk around the tower. It is impressive driving to this you can see it fr miles and miles before you arrive, nice place, you kinda wonder how did this get here? Nothing similar to it close by.

The only problem with Devil's Tower is that it is practically out of the way no matter where you are heading or coming from. It is out in the middle of nowhere, so you will have to take a detour to see it.

We went in the winter, which was absolutely beautiful. It would have been cool to have been able to get out and hike around and have a picnic or something. There was tons of wildlife, even in the winter.

We were on a time limit, seeing as how we were trying to get to Yellowstone before sunset, but it was still worth going out of the way. We also enjoyed reading about it after we left. It was a pretty fascinating thing to experience.
