I don't know if I would make a special trip three unless I was a climber but if you are in the southwest part of South Dakota; take a fews hours to visit. Like the Native American story behind the creation of the monument.

“WOW!!!”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

It is a bit off I-90, but is a definite must see! Take the trail around the monument - fairly level and paved. Fantastic if you are into photography.

“Amazing!”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

Worth driving to if you are in the area. This monument is seen in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". We walked the one mile loop around the tower and saw lots of deer, a porcupine, and people rappelling up the tower! Do not miss the prairie dog town as you are driving out on the right side. Also, stop in the big country store at the corner to shop. It has much better souvenirs than the gift shop inside the national monument.

“Really great & impressive monument”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

I took a side trip off I-90 on the way from Buffalo to Rapid City to visit the monument. Glad that I did. There is a one mile trail around the base that isn't too hard to navigate. Another longer trail lower down the base also. The information provided around the tower is very helpful for understanding everything. There are also a few overlooks with impressive views of the country side.

On the way down from the tower, make sure to stop to see the prairie dog town. The field is filled with them and you can watch them protecting their habitats and listen to them communicating with each other, pretty loudly.

Definitely a good side trip to visit the memorial.

“Wow it is A-MAZE-ING”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

Way out of the way in northeast wyoming. The leftover magma plug of an old volcano that otherwise eroded away. Take the walk around the base - not too steep and has lots of benches to sit and gaze. Small park - just the monument really. Cool prairie dog city near the entrance.

In a RV? I would recommend staying at the KOA located near the entrance on the east side of the tower. Very nice park with a view of the rock from just about every site. Wake up early in the morning and get some great pics of the sun hitting the rock at dawn.
