While there's plenty to do and see in the Black Hills, the trip out here was well worth it. The tower itself is such a spectacle and it's good fun to observe it from all angles while doing the loop around it. We also observed two sets of climbers coming down on opposite sides. The view from the trail was a surprise, as the tower sits on a kind of dais that is itself high above the surrounding area, so there are several scenic vistas from the trail. On the way up (or down) there is also a Prairie Dog town and the residents were out and about even at 3pm on a hot July day. We really enjoyed our time here. Well worth the entrance fee ($15) and the drive. From there we drove north 45 minutes to make a brief visit to Montana. This was solely because I've never been there and want to see all 50 states, but I must say the drive up was gorgeous and at many points no other people were visible from the road. It was a wonderful sense of seclusion and peace.

We did this park at lunch, utilizing the picnic facilities near the administration building, these were clean, shaded, with better restrooms than the main information center at the base of the tower. We completed the walk with six kids, ages 2-12, in the afternoon with minimal effort. You do need water bottles if you're a flat-lander like me. There were zero rattle snakes seen or heard by our party.

We expected to just look and not walk the trail. We ended up walking the trail, well worth it. We just took it slow, stopped at several of the many benches. Take water with you.

So worth the drive out the monument itself. Don't just stop and see it on the highway. We hiked the tower path. It was gorgeous and was well kept with frequent benches for those needing a break.

We made the drive to Devil's Tower while staying in Spearfish. It's a pretty neat place, and the hike around the base of the tower was cool. We seen a deer and her two fawns on the backside of the hike, as well as a rockclimber halfway up the tower. Definitely worth the trip if you are in the area. The field of prairie dogs on the entrance road was a plus.
