“Back every year”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

I stay at this hotel at least once a year and have always had a good experience. The location is prime and if you want to stay in a higher end hotel in Mammoth Lakes, this is it. The service is country strong; which means very nice, responsive but not moving at the pace of a city hotel (which is fine by me.) The accommodations are nice but not over the top. The pool and jacuzzi were a welcome retreat after a long drive and the views are very good. I haven't tried the restaurant; preferring to venture out to the town for eats. I appreciate having a Starwood option when I travel and while I enjoy roughing it on the occasion I would like to relax and enjoy a bit of country luxury this place fits the bill nicely.

Room Tip: If you are facing the pool try to get a higher level (especially if you are SPG.) It can be a bit no...

Have stayed here several times mostly in their two bedroom suite with family. Always pleased with accomodations and service. We hear that the restaurant has improved. It's definitely the best hotel in Mammoth.

Month of Arrival:April 2013

Disappointed in SPG Platinum Recognition:

Recently stayed for a quick 2 night stay. At check-in, asked if upgrade was available. I was advised that upgrades only available for a $100 fee per night. I was shocked (and offended) as 1st time a Westin has tried to charge me for an upgrade - I've been SPG platinum for 12 years and am now lifetime platinum. Seems some of the rooms are privately owned/revenue shared. Still should not matter if they are licensed by Westin - either you provide SPG benefits or you don't get the starwood license. Apart from the bad taste left from the front desk, the rest of the stay was ok. Restaurant was good but pricey - had both dinner and breakfast. Great service - I was in a rush for breakfast and service was very speedy!

Room was decent and clean. Bed was comfortable. Nice to have fireplace in room.

Not much of a lobby and very small and dark gym.

Didn't get a glass of champagne at check-in as some have commented.

To be short:

Pros:
-The pool is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. I hate cold water, so slipping into a pool that felt like luke warm bath water when it was 45 degrees outside was awesome.
-Everything is at your fingertips. There is a ski rental (run by Mammoth Mountain, not the hotel) in the hotel. You can rent skis and buy your lift ticket right there. Then walk out the door, down some stairs and across the street is the gondola to the lifts. Very convenient.
-the rooms are beautiful. Fireplace, window seat and roomy. We had the fireplace going for ambiance and the air conditioning going to keep us comfortable. I know...you gotta love California.
-Walking distance to shops and dining

Cons

-the WiFi is terrible. I mean, we could barely use FaceTime to say hi to our kids every night. They did warn us upon check-in that this was the case. We were told that Internet is weak no matter where you are in the area and they do their best to keep the signal strong in the hotel, but that even in the slow season when there aren't as many people there using devices that its still pretty weak.

That was really our only complaint. If it weren't for the weak WiFi (again, I know, but we like to use our computers to play games and watch streaming movies...) I would have given 5 stars.

I think anyone would enjoy their stay here!

CONS:
1. The pool/jacuzzi hours END at 10 p.m. At 11:30 p.m. we had to call to report A LOT of noise and drunks keeping us up from the pool areas-right below our rooms. Please CLOSE the pool and jacuzzi at 10 p.m. as those are the hours! There was a couple that was getting WAY too intimate in the jacuzzi and a bunch of drunks. I HATE HATE HATE to be kept up at night since we ski early (very mushy snow this time!)
2. BOTH jacuzzis were greenish and very smelly on April 9th and 10th. Need better maintenance out there! Finally added chlorine the next day. It also says NO GLASS and several people had huge wine glasses out there. Not safe! Many kids were NOT being supervised either. Please have an employee come out to the pool area every 30 minutes just to check around quickly!
3. In that past, I believe we had to use our room key to enter the gym, go to the pool area, and even enter the hotel from the "Village stairs entrance." This time a room key wasn't required for anything. There were some very trashy people around the pool area that did NOT appear to be guests of the hotel.
4.. What happened to the water with fruit slices dispenser by the pool/grill?
5. Not enough pool lounge chairs/chairs outside! We counted only 7 lounge chairs and the pool and hotel are BIG. There is plenty of room to add a lot more chairs. Ridiculous at the price we paid to barely have any seating out there. A drunk family sat on our towels and just dumped all their junk on top of ours on our pool chair. Not cool. Need to add more seating outdoors!!!
6. No pool tables or ping pong tables for kids/teens! There is plenty of room downstairs to add these things that cost a few hundred bucks.
7. Coming home from the Village/Gondola in ski boots (or even tennis shoes), the 75+ steps UP to the back door were VERY brutal- steep and in high altitude. I don't recommend it for old people or small children.
8. Expensive hotel restaurant-skip it unless you are rich.
9. Hotel seems over-priced because the rooms are narrow.
10. Too late now, but this hotel needs more elevators.
PROS:
1. The best thing about this hotel is the very nice pool area! The pool was heated up and was very nice. HIGHLY recommend this hotel in the Spring and Summer, not so much in Winter.
2. Believe it or not, we had to turn the AC on after skiing (it was VERY warm in mid-April) and it is one of the few hotels in Mammoth that has AC. AC is a MUST HAVE in the summer when it is in the 90s and low 100s F. The AC was great.
3. Location, location, location. Walk down to the Village for food. Ride the Village Gondola up to Canyon Lodge (skiing).
4. Very nicely decorated rooms and hotel! Our room had a kitchenette w/fridge which was awesome. Be sure to stop by VONS when you first enter town for groceries. The small grocery in "The Village" charges like 3 times more than VONS!
5. Very nice bed, pillows, bathroom was fabulous.
6. Can't believe the people who complain about the dogs. Sorry-we don't have one, but we like the dogs.

Room Tip: It is worth getting a room with a kitchenette to save money (I don't think all the rooms have th...

If you want to stay well in Mammoth, then just stay here. The location is great as you have the gondola straight outside the door to take you up to Canyon Lodge, the rooms are plenty big enough for a family, and the outdoor pool is great, if a little warm for serious swimmers!! Saying that, after a days skiing, you've probably done enough exercise! We changed our booking at the last minute, and thank God we did, as everything we needed was at this hotel. The breakfast was more than acceptable, setting you up for the active day ahead, and dinner was also very good. The only down side is the lift scenario, as there are only 2 and they can get very crowded when everyone is trying to get out and then back to the room at the end of the day. This is just something you have to live with though, and its not so bad. I do agree with other reviewers about the 75 steps....I am a fit female middle aged triathlete but at 8000 feet, even I felt the burn!!!
An idea for the hotel would be a games room for kids, and older kids? A pool table(s) and some activities in that genre would be fantastic - something we had in a Hyatt in Naples, Florida which went down extremely well with young people and their parents...!

Room Tip: try to get a room facing the outdoor pool, as the rooms on the front of the hotel can be noisy first...

We are starwood preferred, so had a wonderful champagne welcome on arrival. Much needed after 6 hours in a car with kids, haha!!!
The room was nice, had a one bedroom. Could have designed it to be just slightly larger. Nice fireplace and balcony where we could overlook the gondola.only problem is we're were only on seco d floor and right over the entrance to hotel, so noisy. Only good thing is mammoth shuts down very early so no noise after 10, haha.
The gondola and village were just across the street. Many stairs down, but again great location.
The pool was perfectly heated and hot tubs were nice. Just not enough chairs pool side!
The on sight ski rentals were great!
The best service was hands down the valet guys....they were ALL so helpful and very friendly!!!
