Convict Lake Resort
Reviewed January 9, 2007

We wanted to have a little getaway before school started and decided to try Convict Lake. Our cabin was the Dolly Varten. The place was great! We had a BBQ in front of the cabin that we used every night, the kitchen every day. We rented a boat and went out on the lake fishing, we fished in the stream and we did horseback riding there. The staff is A+, so friendly and helful had a small town feel. Even our fellow neighbors staying in different cabins would stop and talk. It was so nice to be away from traffic and noise. The wildlife was great, deers all over walking right past you and at sunset the occassional bats would be flying around not to mention all sorts of birds. It's also nice because you can bring your pets with you and our dog really enjoyed being in the outdoors. This vacation is one that stands out from any other because when you left you felt truely refreshed and relaxed - not the hectic pace of sightseeing that you often do on vacations. I highly recommend this to any one or any age.

The cabin we rented was a bit small but what an amazing place!!! You can walk to the lake in two minutes and the lake is so breathtaking. There is a market that has whatever you need and an amazing restraurant. The great thing was they allow dogs and our golden retreivers had a blast. Tons of activities to do in the area, great hikes and a great hike around convict lake, kayaking, mt. biking. The cabins are a bit rustic but it has everything you need and the people were all very helpful. We will go again for sure!

I have stayed at Convict Lake Resort about every other year for about six years. Sometimes in the campsite adjacent to the Resort, sometimes in the cabins. If the party who stayed at the Kamloop cabin had checked the Convict Lake website (which has been updated with the exact specifications of each cabin), they would have had the information regarding the size of the cabin and pertinent information regarding their reservation: refunds, etc. They also might have been able to arrange their stay around some goodies the Resort offers. Convict Lake Resort has frequent fall specials with bonuses of extra night stays with a minimum stay and/or vouchers for boats and the restaurant. I have always had a great time at Convict Lake Resort and find the older cabins comfy--cozy. It's a much better deal and location than anything I have seen at Mammoth Lakes or the surrounding area.

In looking for a family vacation cabin in the Sierras for our family of 5, parents and college aged travelers - We decided on Convict Lake Resort, as it offered cabins of various sizes, along with boat rentals on the nearby lake, great trout fishing, and horseback riding.

In addition, it had a restaurant on property that served gourmet meals in the dining room as well as out on the lawn area, with a beautiful mountain backdrop to enjoy.

We decided on "Kamloop" a cabin that "sleeps 11" according to the website, upon the recommendation of Dennis, the telephone agent who helped with the booking. We booked in May for an August visit.

Due to the size of the cabin we thought that we might be able to ask a few friends to join us. Well, a good thing we didn't. In the one and only bedroom there were two queen beds and a bunk bed - so all 5 of us slept together. In addition there is only one bathroom. The other two rooms housed a living room including a TV -- and the kitchen was a nice size. There was a fold out couch in the TV room and a futon in the kitchen -neither of which appeared to be comfortable options for us. Having said that, the beds and linens in the bedroom were fine and comfortable.

Although the cabins are old, they have been refreshed with new bathroom fixtures and include satellite TVs. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pots and pans, and cooking utensils.

We did experience disappointment with Dennis, when we let him know on Day 1 that we might have to leave on Day 3 instead of Day 5. He indicated that if he was able to sell the cabin for Friday and Saturday nights, that he would refund us for Day 4 & 5. Before leaving we inquired and were told that they did sell the cabin for Friday and Saturday nights. When the refund came, it totaled all of $130 - not the $300 a night that we had paid in advance, leaving us with a bad taste in our mouth. All in all the three nights costs us $1500....yikes!

So, did we have a good time? Yes, the resort is located in a beautiful part of the Sierras, and if were not for the small sleeping space and the inability to trust the resort to live up to it's verbal commitment on a refund - it would have been a vacation to remember with fondness. Will we return? At that price, would you?
