Owner description: Lake known for its alpine scenery and rainbow trout.

In the summer and fall we enjoy fishing for trout here. We have fished both from shore and from a boat. Rentals are available on the lake. We have also gone hiking.

Convict Lake got its name as the result of an ambush here September 17, 1871, where a group of inmates escaped from prison in Carson City. Sheriff George Hightower caught up with the convicts and a shoot out took place.

There is a resort as well as camping nearby. At the resort there is a very good fine dining restaurant called The Restaurant at Convict Lake.

We only had 10 minutes here. There is a trail around the lake to fully appreciate its beauty and serenity.

Located 34 miles north of Bishop and only 10 minutes drive from Mammoth, this place is definitely worth your time. After driving few miles on a narrow and winding road, the beauty of Convict lake with Mt Morrison on the backdrop is simply breathtaking. Right place for someone who loves the out doors. Lots of activities. Aside from fishing, visitors can do a 3 miles easy hike around the lake, camping, boating, and biking. There's also a resort that offers accommodation and fine dining. During fall season, the aspen trees turn golden yellow that add to the beauty of this place. Worth a visit any time of year.

Lovely walk around the lake before dinner. It took an hour and a half with a three year old. There are a few geocaches to find on route. Saw several deer, 2 eagles and heard a woodpecker.
