Liked: beautiful surrounding, great little kitschey general store; very nice restaurant attached (geared more toward older, formal crowd - although it does have gynormous bass fish posted in the bar). Fish is well stocked, 12" trout swimming around the shallow shoreline - god knows what's out in the deep!

It doesn't get better than the restaurant at Convict Lake in the Mammoth Lakes area. Indeed, this restaurant would compete well with some of the best restaurants in L.A. and S.F. Inventive, delicious preparations of high-quality food that are well-presented; very good wines by the glass. The service is excellent , professional, yet appropriately friendly. The price of dinner here is worth it. The only competitor in town: Skadi. You'll get very tired of mediocre, but less expensive dinners if you pass up the Restaurant at Convict Lake (or Skadi).

Don't be put off when you drive up and think you are looking at a pizza place. To the side of the informal bar and pizza part of the building is the handsome room that is the restaurant at Convict Lake.

This lake with a fascinating history (convicts actually engaged in a gun battle with a posse) and backdrop of towering cliffs (soaring three thousand feet above the lake) is both scenic and enjoyed by fishing fans. An ambitious hiker can take a trail following a stream that flows into Convict that leads to Dorothy, Genevieve, and other backcountry lakes that are beautiful but rarely visited. Be advised that the trail ascends about 3,000 feet in five miles, and has limited shade; nonetheless, the climb was worth every penny for the scenery that lay ahead.
