“Expensive salt.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2012

Went out for a little date night and found the food almost inedible and the bill extraordinary. The staff here is very respectful, kind, and helpful, though I guessed there were no more oysters before our waiter knew. The mushroom consumme was well presented but tasted like a overly salted stock. We had to request a soup spoon to eat it. At $36, I expected more than the bitterly over seasoned 2 1/2 scallops served for our entree. Alternatively, the grilled brussells sprouts were bland and without character. There are many great restaurants in Mammoth, this is not one of them.

“Sleek but disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2012

Just got back from a weekend trip to Mammoth and had the opportunity to eat at Whitebark with my wife and 2 other couples. This is our second time there and I was eager to try it again.
First of all, this is definitely the prettiest restaurant in Mammoth and has a fun vibe and atmosphere. The service was very good but the food was disappointing. The prices are very high, which you might expect at a Westin Hotel signature restaurant in the Villages at Mammoth. Afterall, this is a resort type experience. That being said, when one pays $75 for an entree and salad, you would expect a high level of food satisfaction. Unfortunately, Whitebark did not deliver. The dishes sound wonderful (scallops with truffle sauce, slow cooked lamb in clay terrine pots, etc), but did not measure up. The lamb was average. Our braised short ribs were tough. The truffled mac and cheese was a hit. I would try this restaurant again, however, only if money is no object.

“Too complex, looking for a simpler menu apres ski”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2012

We really enjoyed the hotel and convenience to town/mountain. However after our 3rd day, we were aching and just wanting to relax close to home so we tried the Whitebark. We looked at the menu online first and found that it was outdated when we arrived. We are Italian and were interested in some pasta but the only pasta on the menu was german spatzle with an odd sauce. We tried the scallops with a crab crust and it was coated in hot pepper and inedible - literally left them on the plate. Ribeye was fine but pricey. Kids were hoping for some homemade sorbet, but the sorbets of the evening were blueberry rosemary, lemon thyme or tomato basil - even our server thought they sounded gross . . . I don't think it is totally a reflection on the chef as it wasn't our "style of food" but in such a big hotel, it would be nice to have a bistro menu or some ironclad dishes not coated in intricate spices. Great service though!!

“Good food, slow but friendly service, avoid the bar!!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2012

Our Family went for Valentines Day. Before sitting down for dinner we wanted to have a drink at the Restaurant-bar. There was only one more party besides us, but it took about 15 min for the bar tender to take our drink order. We went with our kids, so there were only a couple of sodas, and two adult beverages. Even that order seemed to difficult to remember and one of the drinks was not what we ordered. When we asked to replace it, the waitress brought it back with a snide comment. So, - AVOID THE BAR!
The Restaurant was better. The menu is very innovative and serves up some very interesting items. The only entree we didn't like was the raw-pasta. The pork chop was among the best I've ever tasted. The vine list was surprisingly interesting with a wide variety from all over the world. The service was too slow. Very friendly but very, very slow. I would consider going back for special occasion but it's a bit to pricey to make it a regular stop.
