We have been coming to Mammoth for years (skiing) and I can't believe we never stopped there. This place is amazing! So breathtaking it is unreal. You can do a little (or bigger) hike and go down to be closer. Or you can just admire from the top and take some pictures. But if you can , do walk down- it will be well worth it!

We've been coming here since the '70s, so it's hard to see it in its current state. Back in the old days, there would be dozens, maybe 100s here on a holiday weekend swimming and soaking in the mixed hot thermal and cold creek water or sunning on the creek banks. Now that area at the bottom of the walkway is totally fenced off with warning signs every few feet of the dire dangers of entering the area our swimming in the creek. Pretty sad. On our last visit, a few had wiggled under the fence, but most of the visitors stayed on the legal side much to the disappointment of their whining kids.

But, this is still a beautiful place. Hike a few hundred yards upstream, past the end of the fencing, and you will find a colorful canyon above the clear rushing stream. In the Spring there are pretty wildflowers and grasses to compliment the volcanic and travertine rocks. And you will only have to share it was a few fisherpersons. Bring your lunch or a book and spend some quality time.

This is a miniature version of areas in Yellowstone. Very dramatic and well worth the visit. We used to be able to swim in certain sections which was a high point of our trips to Mammoth. The rangers say it's too dangerous now. Hope that's the truth, and not just budget cutbacks and problems with people who abuse the privilege.

This place is like a mini Yellowstone with natural hot pools and steam vents along the creek. Unfortunately, strict rules are enforced for fishing alongside the creek like: "Don't hurt the fish". Catch and release on a single hook. Make sure the fish depart safely and don't remove them from the stream! Only place we encountered fish and game rangers. I thought we might give the fish a massage too! Pools are fenced off. Definite sulphuric odor in the area with mineral deposits alongside the creek. Despite the restrictions, enjoyed the visit.

Hot creek hosts the Hot Creek Fish Hatchery, Hot Creek natural hot springs, and a stretch of a good trout fishing creek. The Hot Creek Natural Hot Springs can be dangerous and visitors should heed any written warning signs in the area.
