“Good Stay because of correct expectations!”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

Just finished a 4 night/ 3 day ski trip to Mammoth Mountain Inn. First, the opinions expressed previoulsy are pretty much correct. Property is old, it is noisy and it does need work. However, it is right across the street from the Main Mountain lodge and gondola and gives you great acces to the mountain. The people that work here are very friendly and helpful. Stay and ski package is a great deal. You can have a good stay here as long as you have the right expectations.

After staying in their sister property(juniper lodge) three weeks ago and having a horrible experience we decided to give the Mammoth Mountain Inn a chance and we were told to call ahead of time and tell them about our experience at the other lodge. We got a sympathetic response but were told that they really couldn't help us and we had a room in another building that's 50 yards from the main building.

Upon check in they told us the same thing. The view is nice and the bed is good, but we listened to the noisy people above us until midnight and again at 630 am not very restfull. The shower is fiberglass and squeaks so badly.

Ate dinner last night in the Grill, very subpar for an upscale resort at $100 plus for two.

Was hoping for so much more. I think VRBO is our next choice.

Convenient location to snowboard but the rooms are TINY and old.

Pros:
- Walking distance to ski lift
- Free shuttle to town
- Room service decently priced and edible

Cons:
- Old
- Tiny bathroom
- Only one restaurant in the hotel

I stayed at the MMI last year and wrote a so-so review--complimenting the ski experience but noting the dismal "nightlife" and uninspired room decor. GM Jette Larsen was kind enough to respond that my comments would be considered. Well, I stayed there again this year, and, I have to say, things were better, though still not perfect. For one thing, this time I stayed in a "deluxe king" in the main building--big difference from last season's smaller queen bed room in an outbuilding. From slopes to room in two minutes flat. Big comfortable bed and much nicer bath. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bar was livelier this time--not sure why--but I'm not complaining! The Inn's bar has truly one of the most beautiful ski mountain views in America--all from a huge peaked glass window that you face from the barstools. Just great. Bartender was fun and friendly too, as were the other barflies. I do think the "renovation" they recently did at the Inn was a missed opportunity. The Inn was (I think) built in the 1950's and could have been turned back into a cool outpost of "midcentury" style. Instead they opted for an unadventurous "lite" renovation right out of the late 1980's. And the walls and ceilings in the rooms are thin--constant sound of chatter and clomping ski boots in the early evenings and mornings. But there are real positives: the ski-in ski out experience, complete with "ski valet," is as good as ever. My simple pasta dinner at the bar was fine (and not expensive). The pool and jacuzzis are nice (same great mountain view), but I do wonder why the Inn doesn't sell beer in cans or plastic bottles so people wouldn't bring glass bottles out to the pool/spa area (as they do). Although I had complained last year about the lack of transportation to the Village in the evening, it turns out they now do have service there up to around 11pm, so an offsite dinner out for the carless is a possibility. I chose the Inn because it's very convenient for a quick flight up to the mountains for skiing--free shuttle from and to the airport, onsite ski rental, etc. All that is still an attraction; I just note that some (but not all) of the flaws I noted last year weren't there this year. So I guess it's gone in my estimation from a B- to a B+.

We were here for personal holidays. We almost cancelled my reservation due to the negative comments from other customers. But, we decided to gave it a try. We had stayed for 3 days in total. The front desk services is very good. Very friendly and helpful. The room itself maybe a little bit old. But, it's clean and comfortable. We had not experienced the noise problem as many other comments mentioned. Our room's located at the middle at 3rd floor and next to elevator. Very quiet to us.

Room Tip: Choice the East/West Annex & Garage. It's relatively quiet. You can park your car in the gar...

Great location - you cannot fault it - even if you travel into town for dinner, plan it right it is easy to use the shuttles - but if you are there to ski, then its perfect.
Food - bad food at night, good food for simple value breakfast.
Service - mixed service - some staff were really helpful (Harriet and Cade thanks) others were simply ornaments and not worth asking anything of. The mammoth mountain security guys helped us and were great (thanks Mike and Dick)
Value - well its cheap for a reason. As to if there is better value around without the convenience, we are not sure.
Business center - forget a bout it - its like the US economy has died and gone to hell its so crap.
The rooms - comfortable, good beds, plenty of water - everything worked once inside.
Find and use the Jacuzzi - it was a highlight especially if the sun is shining - and its largely unused.
Simply put - if you want to ski and not much else - stay here. Its simple cheap and nasty with a great location and no thrills. If you want luxury, or relaxation and are not fussed with a few lifts, or buses stay elsewhere. Otherwise we loved the mountain overall. If the place was not reasonable value (and we are not sure it was) then this would rate poorly.
It is a shame as a little bit of money spent on the foyers and some organised staff or training and such could make a big difference to the feel.

Room Tip: Ask for one inside the main building to save having to walk between buildings - dependant on price a...

After losing our reservation twice (how does this happen?!) we arrived to find MMI had no record of our reservation or a room. They eventually "upgraded" us to a ~1,250 sq ft condo that slept 8. We should have been suspicious...there was a reason this room wasn't booked...it was outdated, dingy and furnished like a North Korean prison. After a number of calls to American Express and the hotel manager we eventually were transferred to a room that was remodeled "recently" (like 1990). At this point we reserved ourselves to a weekend of painful experiences…we also had problems with the shuttle (being stuck in the cold!), wifi, the seemingly simple task of getting a humidifier delivered to our room, service at the restaurant/bar, and mis-billing upon checkout. I feel bad for the employees- management needs to invest more in Capital improvements and infrastructure. Mammoth Mountain Inn could be world class, but until then, avoid this place at all cost!

Room Tip: When booking request a room in the main building.
