We took the gondola ride to the top. The views were stunning! Stopped in at McCoys for a snack and a beer. Good food, though a little pricey.

“No fear for novices here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Weather clear & bright and not nearly as cold as I'd expected. Slopes groomed daily (can sometimes hear the snowcats working at 6am though). All chairlifts stop at 4pm (don't know if that's usual). Lots of "hosts" on the slopes, my husband took quite a tumble and one appeared within a couple of minutes to check on him. Lots of staff to help at chairlifts & keep the queues moving. Food excellent in the main lodge, but some is cooked to order so takes quite a long time.
If your true purpose is skiing then this is the place - if skiing is more incidental to the holiday then perhaps not.

And it's a mighty long drive from LA. We were put off flying to the mountain by fears that flights from LA often get cancelled in the mid & low season. Not sure that was the best decision.

“Great skiing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

Mammoth has great terrain and a wide variety of runs to choose from. The scenery is beautiful and it is a fun mountain to explore because it is so huge. You won't get bored here or feel like you've exhausted all the runs. Some things that bothered me: Since it is so huge, you can end up pretty far away from home and then when it is time to head in, it can take 4 runs and 4 lifts to get back. And if you're tired, it can be hard. But, they have a good shuttle bus system that circles around all the base areas and I used that a few times. So I found its large size to have some pluses and some minuses. Also, they could put up more signage at the tops of the runs. Oftentimes, they aren't clearly marked and I had no idea which run exactly I was on. Don't eat lunch at Outpost 14 - the food selection is limited and not worth it. It is also outdoor seating only. Overall, Mammoth offers excellent skiing and I would recommend it, especially for Southern Californians. Don't even bother with Big Bear and come here!

“Surprising in more ways than one”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

This was our first time skiing in Mammoth and it was a surprise in more ways than one.

Ski runs were excellent with lots and lots of good runs for intermediate skiers. Despite no recent snow, the runs were in good condition. Even just before Easter by picking runs carefully you could avoid the crowds.

On the negative side there are a lot of slow lifts and surprising a lot of them don't have safety bars. Sign posting of runs was poor. Some lifts didn't have maps at the top. Not many ski hosts around. On mountain cafeteria didn't open until lunch. Food and drink was expensive even for a ski resort, turkey salad bagels $9, Starbucks Frapacinno $7, etc....

Lift tickets at Mammoth are only just slightly cheaper than Vail and Beaver Creek. At Beaver Creek groomers go out during the day, there are ski hosts at the top of every lift, they give out grooming maps in the morning, there are free cookies at the lifts at 3pm, the Epic card tracks your vertical every day and has a great app, etc.....

If Mammoth is going to charge similar rates then it needs to compete with these resorts. Although the skiing at Mammoth was fantastic, the facilities didn't feel like there were in the same league.

“Great ski area, most lifts (25)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

Every type of trail, slopes, lower middle and upper valley for tree skiing. Lower lodges have a good variety of food. You can borrow video cameras and have a video help staff. You can review your videos at the Canyon or Main lodge.
