“Hunter cabin camping”
Reviewed March 12, 2010

We have been camping at hunter cabin for many years and are glad to see that everyone is keeping the area clean. Last summer we found numerous diabetic hypo needles in the area and would hope that the person would not leave them around as it is unsafe. Will be camping again this year around last week in april and hope to see lots of flowers. The road was in good shape last year and hope the rain has not adversly affected it too bad.

“4 wheel drive rocks”
Reviewed March 10, 2009

My wife and I came over the Hunter Mountain road in our Toyota Rav4. Thankfully we have 4 wheel drive or we would still be stuck up there! The uphill sections with snow were a bit dicey in our car, luckily the dirt was exposed on one side giving us enough grip to continue (after getting stuck a couple of times!). The other tricky part was a puddle in a hollow completely covering the road. I had to wade in to make sure we had enough clearance! I think if we had been a few days earlier our car would not have made it. After the snow melts and the road dries up a car like ours should have no problems as long as you DRIVE CAREFULLY and are prepared for the worst case scenarios. It is beautiful countryside though so get out there and see it!

“A bit hairy in winter”
Reviewed January 20, 2009

After visiting the Racetrack in Death Valley, we opted for taking the Hunter Mountain Road to Hwy 190, as the reviews of Lippincott Mine Road sounded bad. Starting from Teakettle Junction the road is excellent - much better than the Ubehebe to Racetrack Road. After traversing Hidden Valley, we missed the right hand turn off going up the mountain, and ended up at a dead end abandoned mine/homestead. Backtracking, we then headed up the mountain finding considerable snow, ice, and mud climbing up and over the range. The mud got quite deep in places, however most nerve-racking were the ice covered uphills with a sheer drop over the side. We finally made it to Saline Valley Road only to find a "Road Closed" sign for the travelers headed in the opposite direction (now the tell us!).
