“great place”

De Soto National Memorial
Reviewed April 15, 2014

This is a great place to take your family (and pets) for a beautiful nature walk with plenty of shaded areas. You can also learn about DeSoto and the history of this area. There are picnic spots with a great view of the gulf. There are beach areas that are dog friendly, also.

This is a very nice National Park for its size. It is free to visit and there are nice trails to walk with your spouse, children, dogs or just alone. There are beaches to walk on or play with you dog. You can fish from the shore, sit on one of the many benches and enjoy nature or watch boats cruising the Manatee River. There are historic programs put on at various times of the year that tell the history of De Soto and his adventures in Florida. There are items like helmets and chain mail that you can try on for a feel of the attire worn by the Spanish explorers and imagine how hot and miserable they would have been in the heat of our summers. A great place to picnic with the family and you can't beat the price. Be sure to check out the gift shop and the exhibits inside the visitor center.

Enjoyed walking around the beautiful grounds and visiting the museum. Excellent information for those interested in the exploration expeditions of the Americas. Museum historians dressed in period clothing give a nice discussion of what it was like during the time of Spanish settling of Florida.

This NPS location serves it's purpose, but it could really use an update. I know they are probably low on the priority list for funding, but they really could use an updated movie and a little more visitor center room. I did learn a lot about DeSoto and his time in America.

Have walked the park alone and with my husband. We both find it a pretty park and view of the river, an easy walk, and by takung different paths youncan walk from .5 to 1.5 miles. The station has an interesting map of De Soto's explorations of Florida and neighboring states. I watched children interacting with the rangers and completing an activity book, which they thoroughly enjoyed. A FREE activity for all.
