“Lovely place to walk the dogs...”

De Soto National Memorial
Reviewed July 30, 2013

This is a lovely park with oyster shell paths and bridges through the mangroves and beside the beach. It's never crowed after the tourist season when we normally go there to walk out two Maltese and not too bad even dduring the top tourist times. Most people seem to head out to Anna Maria Island where the traffic is terrible, so we cut the trip short and turn out to the deSoto Memorial. There's a visitor's center there with lots of history and with clean restrooms. Benches are placed along the path, some of them right beside the water. It's one of our favorite places to go about an hour from home, so we do it often. Dogs love it--so there are many of them there on leads. does have "doggy bags" and you are expected to use them. Beautiful water, beautiful place.

A pet friendly park on the shores of the Manatee River and Tampa Bay. It has nature trails with educational signage regarding the plants and animals. A federal park, well maintained with helpful, friendly rangers staffing it. There are pick-up bags available along the trails for your use with your dog. I have visited many times and always enjoyed it.

This is a nice place for a walk. It's pretty well shaded throughout the trail. There is a visitor center that is open during the week and an informational video. There are picnic tables and reenactments to enjoy.

You get a good view of where DeSoto and his party'.supposedly. landed along with visual effects. The movie at the center should not be missed because it is entertaining and very informative about what De Soto and his men endured in this new unexplored country.
