The Desoto memorial is a small gem. It's not a national park but a smaller memorial with a very limited museum and a good film about Desoto's adventures (he was your typical gold hunter). In the winter "season" here in Florida, they have enactors who are very knowledgeable and friendly. They also have had small ope air concerts which have been wonderful If you can attend one of the concerts, bring a chair and dress warmly since it can get cool at night there. Watch osprey and shore birds soar overhead as evening approaches and sunset comes on. The walks through the coastal forest open up to great waterfront views and you can look out of Tampa Bay and the Manatee River.

This place has a small historic area, but we really enjoyed the paths through the mangroves. It has a nice view of the water and we saw a horseshoe crab shell on the beach.

This is a beautiful spot. The walk is under a canopy of trees, with wooden walkways and sandy paths. There are benches to relax on, and a sandy waterfront were kids can find neat things and get there feet wet.

De Soto National Park is set in a beautiful spot, with glorious views out over the water. As is standard with the Park Service, the grounds and buildings are beautifully maintained. The museum, while small, is well done and informative. If possible, try to visit while the Living History program is underway. First off, it is cooler, but it is also very interesting for all ages.
