As Bluegreen owners we found it difficult to find availability at this resort and once we did reserve a week, were not quite sure what to expect as we knew the resort was older.
We were all pleasantly suprised! Although the resort is older, the accomodations were very comfortable. We had one of the one bedroom units across the street from the main complex on the ground level. The 'condo' was quite large and the furnishings were more than comfortable. The rooms were all very clean. The kitchen was stocked with every type of cooking essential needed including a great blender! Laundy is in the back of this building and takes quarters but that wasn't an issue to us.
The pool and hot tub were both very nice and clean. We enjoyed having our lunch in the covered area by the pool which was also an amazing spot for sunsets. We did use the barbecue pits which was nice. Once a week they also had a 'cocktail' hour where you could purchase bloody mary's for $1.
Everyone was very friendly and often gathered each day near the pool. The lady in the office, Collette ??, was exceptionally helpful and took a lot of time to explain to us where everything was on the island. This island has a free trolley service that continually circles the island and there is a stop very close to the resort.
This is also an amazing stretch of beach!! The water was clear, an amazing shade of blue-green and calm the first couple of days and then when Hurricane Ike brushed by, the surfers came out in droves from all over the US. We found an endless amount of seashells, some of them VERY large.
I can't say that we found a lot of great restaurants. The Rod and Reel and City Pier were good and MarVista may have been our favorite. We didn't try BeachHouse unfortunately. Skinny's was ok but Rotten Ralph's really was rotten :( Dips has some wonderful ice-cream and you can stroll down the pier with it. Jane E's IDA had great coffee and seemed a morning hangout for the locals.
Take my word for it...it's the best beach in the area. We took several day trips to other well known beaches while here and none of them were as beautiful as this stretch. PLEASE...use caution if you go to Venice Beach to look for sharks teeth. You will find them but Venice Beach is also well known for 'hustling', if you can call it that.
Unfortunately, we don't have any photos as a giant hurricane generated wave knocked me down and destroyed my camera and phone!
We liked the Via Roma so much we are going back in two weeks! Look out Hurricane Hanks :)
