Spencer House Inn Bed and Breakfast

Spencer House Inn is an immaculate bed and breakfast in a great location.Bed linens very nice; Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. Buffet breakfast was extensive but lacked "health-conscious" items. Mary and Mike work hard at running an efficient operation.

We stayed at the Spencer House Inn on Friday night March 21, 2014. What a pleasant surprise. We wanted to break a short road trip up so we decided to stop off in St. Mary's. We found the Spencer House on line, and couldn't have asked for better.
We were greeted by Mary, who gave us a short tour of the Inn, and also gave us tips on where to go for dinner. We walked from the Inn down to the water, and ended up having a fabulous seafood dinner.
The rooms were well appointed, clean and very comfortable. We slept great and woke up to a fabulous breakfast in the dining room. We enjoyed chatting with the other guests, drinking coffee and getting our fill of southern hospitality.
We will go back! Thanks Mary.

The room we were initially booked into was too small for a couple with luggage for two weeks travel plus camera equipment for wildlife photography. A congenial negotiation for a larger room at a slightly higher rate was successful, and the new room was ample and comfortable. Breakfasts were better than ordinary, but not outstanding. Low fat/cholesterol food was hard to come by, for example, there was no skim milk. Lunches-to-go could be ordered for a reasonable price. These were ample, but meaty and fatty, with little variety to chose from, and no vegies. The three-floor building had a good elevator for trips up and down with luggage, and a convenient stairway. Ventilation was good. The B&B was conveniently located within a short walking distance of the center of the old town and the waterfront. On two days we took the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore, and the ferry dock was in short walking distance of the B&B. The management was very helpful in supplying information on local amenities and on a boat charter. On the final morning, we had to leave for the airport before breakfast began, and the B&B put up an breakfast-to-go for us at no extra charge, a definite plus! This B&B is a well organized and well run operation.

Room Tip: Don't hesitate to select the third floor. It may have the best room for you.

We stayed 2 nights here after 8 previous nights in various chain hotels across Florida, so we really appreciated the personal service and hospitality we received from Ashley, Mary, Holly and Mike, and wished that we could have stayed longer.
Breakfast at Spencer House was a particular treat, with very tasty hot specials as well as a high quality selection of breads. There is a good selection of teas, including several green teas, which was much appreciated, and homemade cookies or cake are available for guests during the day. We did use the very pleasant communal lounge a couple of times but unfortunately we didn't have time to sit on the porch or upper terrace.
We chose room 304 on the top floor, this was a little cosy as one side of the bed was against a wall but nicely decorated and very comfortable. Note that this is an old timber building so there is noise transmission between rooms, this just means that guests have to be considerate of each other and I think Spencer House probably attracts people who would take this into account. Despite the building's intact period character, there is a good sized elevator / lift so we didn't have to carry our luggage upstairs.
St Mary's is a delightful and quiet little town with an attractive waterfront and some interesting historical buildings / sites. It would make an ideal stopping off point for anyone travelling north / south and the Spencer Inn is worth seeking out anyway for the hospitality and welcome they offer. If we are ever back in the area we will definitely stay there again.

Mike, Mary and Holly truly put the needs of the traveler first and go the extra mile to make the stay, as well as finding pleasing dining or activities, pleasant experiences. They were warm, friendly and perfect hosts.

The B&B itself is comfortable and nice. Breakfast was wonderful and for an extra charge, lunches were made available for trips to Cumberland Island. These were well rounded meals. You wont go hungry.

I am grateful to have found The Spencer house because of the genuine care and hospitality bestowed on their guests. Weeks before my trip Holly and Mary assisted me in getting organized to attend the historical tours of Cumberland Island. Every suggestion and referral received from, Mary was absolutely, "spot on!" Food for the tour and the 2 Breakfasts during the stay was PERFECT. I brought home their amazing home-made granola and the artisan mug I drink coffee from today is treasured. I will be returning to Spencer House Inn Bed & Breakfast because they are "The finest host of St. Mary's".

Room Tip: Higher floors are more private.
