My wife and I spent 3 nights in room 205 at the start of our vacation in early June. Like many guests I expect, we planned our visit around a trip to Cumberland Island. We were also attracted by the chance to chill out for a couple of days in a quiet little township and recover from our flight from the UK. We came up trumps in every respect. First of all, the Spencer House is spectacular both inside and out. It is located right in the heart of St Mary's quaint historic district, just a few minutes walk from the Cumberland Island ferry and the town's best restaurants. St Mary's itself is very picturesque and we found that everyone we met was full of Southern charm. We enjoyed the best value activity of our whole vacation - a one hour "not-to-be missed" golf buggy tour around the old town led by a local volunteer, and costing just $5! We heard entertaining stories about St Mary's past (and present) from a truly colourful character. We had an unforgettable day out on Cumberland Island and thoroughly recommend the 6 hour long "van tour" visiting parts of the island which would be difficult to reach otherwise. We dined well on locally caught seafood, cooked to perfection. We were lucky enough to catch an open air, Saturday evening concert in the riverfront park given by an ageing but still talented rock band. All these great experiences were underpinned by our stay at the Spencer House itself. Much has been said of the hosts - Mary and Mike - by other reviewers. It's all true! They are totally committed to making sure that guests have a good time. They show great attention to detail and anticipate your every need. They are always present without in anyway seeming to be intrusive. They are ready to help with any request and proved to be a mine of information. We appreciated the complementary bottles of chilled water left in our room each night as part of the "turn down" service (and the chocolates!). We enjoyed the afternoon refreshments left out each afternoon and it was great to have access to freshly made, early morning coffee way before breakfast. The breakfasts themselves were the best we enjoyed during our vacation, with a wide choice of home made breads and granola in addition to cooked-to-order breakfasts introducing us to Southern home style specialities. We loved reading our books in the rocking chairs on the verandah overlooking the main street. We took up Mary's offer to pre-book ferry reservations for us and the offer of a packed lunch for our visit to Cumberland Island, where there are not any shops or refreshment facilities. The lunch, and a choice of water or delicious lemonade came in an insulated carry-bag - yet further evidence of their attention to detail! Room 205 was quiet (despite being close to the elevator), clean and very comfortable and we slept very well, but I have to say that we found the room a tad cramped. It would have been perfectly OK for a couple of weekenders, but we were toting suitcases and stuff for a two week road trip. There was just one small cupboard with a little hanging space for a few shirts/blouses. We went on to stay in other "top of the range" B&Bs during our trip, some of which were just as beautiful and in settings just as wonderful, but the Spencer House Inn stood out because of the the highest quality of care given to us by the owners and staff. For a couple of wonderful days, they really did make us feel at home.
