“"Southern hospitality at its best"”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

My wife and I spent 3 nights in room 205 at the start of our vacation in early June. Like many guests I expect, we planned our visit around a trip to Cumberland Island. We were also attracted by the chance to chill out for a couple of days in a quiet little township and recover from our flight from the UK. We came up trumps in every respect. First of all, the Spencer House is spectacular both inside and out. It is located right in the heart of St Mary's quaint historic district, just a few minutes walk from the Cumberland Island ferry and the town's best restaurants. St Mary's itself is very picturesque and we found that everyone we met was full of Southern charm. We enjoyed the best value activity of our whole vacation - a one hour "not-to-be missed" golf buggy tour around the old town led by a local volunteer, and costing just $5! We heard entertaining stories about St Mary's past (and present) from a truly colourful character. We had an unforgettable day out on Cumberland Island and thoroughly recommend the 6 hour long "van tour" visiting parts of the island which would be difficult to reach otherwise. We dined well on locally caught seafood, cooked to perfection. We were lucky enough to catch an open air, Saturday evening concert in the riverfront park given by an ageing but still talented rock band. All these great experiences were underpinned by our stay at the Spencer House itself. Much has been said of the hosts - Mary and Mike - by other reviewers. It's all true! They are totally committed to making sure that guests have a good time. They show great attention to detail and anticipate your every need. They are always present without in anyway seeming to be intrusive. They are ready to help with any request and proved to be a mine of information. We appreciated the complementary bottles of chilled water left in our room each night as part of the "turn down" service (and the chocolates!). We enjoyed the afternoon refreshments left out each afternoon and it was great to have access to freshly made, early morning coffee way before breakfast. The breakfasts themselves were the best we enjoyed during our vacation, with a wide choice of home made breads and granola in addition to cooked-to-order breakfasts introducing us to Southern home style specialities. We loved reading our books in the rocking chairs on the verandah overlooking the main street. We took up Mary's offer to pre-book ferry reservations for us and the offer of a packed lunch for our visit to Cumberland Island, where there are not any shops or refreshment facilities. The lunch, and a choice of water or delicious lemonade came in an insulated carry-bag - yet further evidence of their attention to detail! Room 205 was quiet (despite being close to the elevator), clean and very comfortable and we slept very well, but I have to say that we found the room a tad cramped. It would have been perfectly OK for a couple of weekenders, but we were toting suitcases and stuff for a two week road trip. There was just one small cupboard with a little hanging space for a few shirts/blouses. We went on to stay in other "top of the range" B&Bs during our trip, some of which were just as beautiful and in settings just as wonderful, but the Spencer House Inn stood out because of the the highest quality of care given to us by the owners and staff. For a couple of wonderful days, they really did make us feel at home.

My 8-year-old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home! Mary warmly greeted us at the door the minute we arrived. This was just a few hours before a tropical storm, and we wondered about our plans to visit Cumberland Island, but Mary had already inquired and had information and suggestions for us on rescheduling. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Several wonderful restaurants were within a block or two of the inn. The breakfasts - cooked by Mike, I believe - included omelets, orange French toast with almonds, homemade granola, cheese biscuits and muffins, and were delicious. We look forward to visiting again!

What a beautiful place and people too! We really enjoyed our time at the Spencer House and in St. Mary's with a much appreciated clawfoot tub to soak in after a LONG hot bike ride at Cumberland Island. The breakfasts are super and our packed lunch for the bike trip was perfect! Thank you and we look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Quiet back room with KingSize bed is well worth it!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Spencer House. The room was wonderful and I loved the jacuzzi bath especially with the scented oils. Our hosts, Mary and Mike, made us feel right at home. The front porch, the peach teas, the library and the excellent breakfast all made our aniversary stay special.

Without question, Mary and Mike are excellent hosts and know the B&B business. They make you feel right at home and can tell you anything you need to know about the area. The breakfast is beyond outstanding, and lunch they prepared for Cumberland Island was very good and needed, considering the walking that is involved. The rockers on the porches are a great touch and a nice way to meet other travelers. For first timers to a B&B, be advised this is an old building, not a luxury five star hotel. Our room was smaller than I expected, so I recommend putting out the extra bucks and get one of their larger rooms with a soaking tub. When making a reservation, I suggest asking about the square footage of the room. The shower in room 206 is very cramped and could be a little cleaner. The room was supposed to have a queen size bed, but in terms of dimension, it was made for a "small queen". The inner spring matress was quite bouncy: When either one of us would move around on the bed, the other move up and down like a basketball. I suggest asking for a room with a hotel grade firm matress. The rooms do not have individual thermostats, and ours was "stuffy" the first night. Mary adjusted the temp in our room for the secon night, and it helped but never felt really cool. I would stay there again with the caveats mentioned in my review.

Pleasant and comfortable room. The sheets are fresh and clean. Mary made us very comfortable and accommodating to our needs. The lunch basket for our trip to Cumberland island included everything from trash bag to wet wipes. Very knowledgable of all things to do and go in the area. Calling the restaurant to make reservation for us is going an extra mile. Thanks Mary.

This is our second time at the Spencer House, and would recommend to anyone, Mike and Mary the owners are very nice people, they will help you out in any way they can. The breakfast is excellent along with the homemade breads, muffins, cookies etc......and of course the home made granola....so good. The Inn is quiet, nice little town, but yet so close to Cumberland Island, Jekyll Island, St. Augustine and at the end of the day you can come back to St. Mary's and relax at the water front or sit in one of the rockers on the porch and watch the sun go down.
I would also recommend you take the little gulf cart tour of St. Mary's, we learned alot from that little tour in which we did not know all that information the last trip we took, alot of history. If you have the chance check it out, you wont be sorry. They also have a elevator for anyone that can not climb the stairs, which is great for my husband who is handicapped.

Room Tip: We stayed on the third floor in which the rooms were combined, me and my husband stayed in the bigg...
