Scenic route along waterways with plenty of turnouts and some beach access. Green everywhere in spring, color everywhere in fall. Don't miss this when you are in the area!

If you google the Colonial Parkway, most likely some historical information will pop up about the 1980's infamous Parkway murders. Don't let this scare you away from taking a drive on this beautiful parkway. I suggest you travel it during the day and avoid any nighttime travel as it is very dark and there are extensive distances between where you can enter and exit. During the day you will see beautiful scenery of the York river and lush foliage.

Good: No billboards, storefronts or traffic lights; just trees, creeks, inlets and water.
Very direct because of the limited access and makes it easy to get between Yorktown and Williamsburg (and beyond).
It's wide, essentially three lanes, so it's easy to pass dawdlers. There are no lane markings though, which takes a minute to get used to.

Bad: I expected more in the way of historic markers and places to pull off. There were a few, and, to be fair, we didn't stop at any of them, but I sort of envisioned something more like the Petersburg driving tour that would guide you to points of interest about the Yorktown encampment or the battle or other historic events.

If you are planning to travel to the Williamsburg area, then take the time to use this parkway going between Jamestown,Williamsburg and Yorktown.
It's gorgeous and and gives you a sense of the History of America as you make stops along the way.
