It's great to see the NPS Rangers back! We turned up with only an hour before the park closed, but the reception staff took control and steered us towards a ranger tour with the promise that this would tell us the story, explain the battlefield and make us laugh and cry. they weren't wrong. The passion and commitment of our park ranger was simply superb. She took us on a 55 minute tour of the battlefield and the whole Yorktown story, and apologised for cutting it short! It is, as she said, the US's coming of age, and her presentation had quite a few of the crowd wiping their eyes. if that sounds over the top it isn't - she was that good.

We finished by taking the battlefield driving tour which took over an hour - as a tip don't go on this before getting the tour which explains much of what you will see. The tickets for Yorktown or Jamestown include the other site as well, so this represents excellent value and at the minimum one splendid day out.

For most Americians, the batte of Yorktown was what you learned in 8 grade History. Walking the streets and battlefield you get he feeling of what had to take place to achieve this country. Without seeing for yourself you can not imagine what it took for this nation to become free.
Take the walking tour you will see more.

We saw both historic Jamestown and then Yorktown battlefield on successive days. Both are National Historic Sites staffed by the National Park Service. The entry fee covers both sites and is a good deal. The park rangers are excellent at both sites and you should plan on going on at least one guided tour. The driving tour at Yorktown was partially closed on the day that we were there and I was not very impressed with the battle sites that we were able to see. I would recommend skipping the driving tour and tour the town of Yorktown instead.

They have a nice museum with lots of history and a driving tour. By dumb luck, we exited the movie and a walking tour was just starting so we decided to do it. If you go here, the walking tour is free and it will make your experience 100% better because the tour guide was excellent and will explain things you won't see or know on your own. If we hadn't have gone on the walking tour, I would give this place 3 stars.

If you want to do the free driving tour, you can buy a CD for $5 in the gift shop and it will give you exact directions and give you a one hour narrated tour of each stop. It's timed so when you leave the parking lot, you just listen to the CD and follow the directions on where to turn. It will make the battlefield much more meaningful. That, too, was worth the $$.

This experience brought US History to life. Excellent for children and adults! We were able to catch some re enactments, all in period clothing. The CD tour was awesome! We visited with our daughter, son in law and grandchildren ages 7 and 13. They loved it! Can't wait to go again.
