We had fantastic weather for our cruise and really enjoyed the tour. Yes, you do only go out and make a big circle but we thought the experience of getting to sail on a schooner was worth it. Our teens helped hoist the sails, which they thoroughly enjoyed, The captain and crew members took turns telling stories about various cruises up and down the east coast (they are in the Caribbean in the winter) as well as about the points of interest we were passing. We got to see a few dolphins too. Would love to go back for a sunset cruise sometime, but would be willing to do the afternoon cruise again too.

We took the 2 hour afternoon sail. The Alliance is a beautiful vessel and made for a really fun sailing experience. Unfortunately you don't really go anywhere in 2 hours. We probably actually covered about 1-2 miles each way, which really only meant going out beyond the bridge over the harbor and then turning around.

The boat is really not outfitted for sitting. They have a few boxes along the sides that hold life jackets that some people can sit on, but the rest are left to find any surface to 'sit' on, though many aren't even flat.

That said, we still enjoyed to afternoon and felt like the crew was great with our kids and made the 2 hours entertaining and enjoyable. If only there was a more interesting destination, it would have been perfect.

We took the Alliance Schooner 2 hour cruise and found it a bit disappointing. Within the first 10 mins of sailing we were given a 'narrative' by Emily, who knew the history of the area very well but it was not in snyc with sailing by the points of interest. By the time we reached these particular points of interests, the descriptions were long over with and we were all left to chat among ourselves for the remainder of the cruise. TThe crew of 3 were friendly. For the price of this sail, we expected a bit more, we also sat in the river for 15-20 mins doing nothing, while a naval ship passed by.......no explanation for this and still no conversation from the crew.

A fun time for all ages. Informative, fun and interesting stories were told by the crew. Everyone had a hand at hoisting the sails. The kids each had their turn at the helm. We got to shout at the scallywags at the pirate school as the cannon was fired!

The sunset sail was great fun. Our cruise was well over two hours. The weather was unbelievable but I'd recommend a light jacket for the last half hour. The water was choppy at deck but smoothed out as we sailed. Guests are welcome to participate in lifting the sails. Seating is unusual, you pretty much find any flat surface. The boat travels up the York river (estuary), under a large bridge and past a naval weapons test site, then turns around. The sunset was pretty and it was relaxing to feel the waves and watch the light change throughout the trip. Now to the crew, the bearded, salty captain lends credibility and the first mate seems to enjoy his job (he did most of the talking and was lightly humorous). The younger girl was hard working but needed a second coat of deodorant. Wouldn't waste money on concessions. Overall, certainly worth 35 dollars for an experience you'll remember the rest of your life.
