We stopped here with a 1, 5 and 8 year old and all found something to enjoy at Yorktown Victory Center.
The museum was very interesting. My son enjoyed seeing the rat skulls from a ship from the 1700s. My daughter enjoyed dressing up in period clothing.
Outside we saw a weapons demonstration and watered the crops.

We left with several authentic purchases from the gift shop.

We stayed about 2 hours.

A must stop!

For me traveling around this area, visiting the sights touching and seeing what our for running Americans saw and did gave me time to reflect and apreciate what we have done. This center helped to cement all of this for me. Jamestown just a few miles away and Yorktown where we settled with England time well spent.

Yorktown Victory Center was very well done. The museum was excellent, could have taken a whole day. The film is in an excellent auditorium. The outdoor exhibits are attractive, with costumed interpreters explaining what you are seeing. The surgical tent was interesting, and the gentlemen explaining the instruments and medical procedures of the times was approachable and knowledgable. The very best, don't miss part, was the weapons demonstration. They fire a cannon, and a musket. My husband was able to hold and inspect the musket. The gentleman directing the artillery demonstration was wonderful. He answered the many questions my husband had about the weapons and military tactics. If you must choose between Yorktown Victory Center and Jamestown Settlement, choose Yorktown Victory Center.

An awesome experience where we had NO idea what to expect before going. The museum was much smaller than at the Jamestown Settlement, so it was much easier to view and absorb. It was very well done and had some amazing illustrations on the walls. The outside exhibits were especially interesting, and the costumed employees were all very friendly and informative. One area is a re-created 1780's farm with buildings and two absolutely fabulous gardens. The other outdoor area is a re-created Army encampment where you could see tents set up for the troops and officers. Also there was an area where the doctor/surgeon goes over all the 'wonderful' medicine and surgical 'techniques' of the time, showing you the type of tools actually used (ouch!). You might also choose to get in on the musket demonstration (fascinating), and the cannon demonstration (also fascinating) where there is audience participation (kids, especially). Did you know that the families could join the troops and had a special area where they encamped so they could be close by? Lots to see! And fun!
You can buy a combo ticket for $20 for this and the Jamestown Settlement, and you purchase them at one of these two places. Free parking. Note: The Yorktown Battlefield is a federal park, as opposed to the Victory Center being state-run, and is therefore separate in area and entrance fee.

I found the Yorktown Victory Center and Battlefields to be more interesting to me than Jamestown. I wanted to learn more about the military side of the area and this filled the bill. There was a presentation by a man who talked about the medical treatments available to the soldiers, showing the actual instruments they would use. Fascinating. There was also a movie about the war in the center. The battlefield area is one you see from your car - you drive around the area and see the battlefields and get the history from either a guide or from signs.
