“A beautiful outcropping of rock.”

Chimney Rock National Historic Site

You aren't going to find this on your main highways. You have to look for it, or be going to visit somebody that lives near it. That's how I found it. My niece and her family live next to it. You can see it from their yard. We went up close and it's impressive. There are lots of bluffs near it on highway 71 also. If you're ever in southwest Nebraska, check it out! I was just there and it snowed both November 5th and 6th and it's very pretty covered in snow.

The visitiors center explains the importance of this landmark to travelers and has numerous artists' depiction of it over the years. The patio has a great view of the rock. Nice gift shop.

This is a very good place to see if you enjoy history. It is a significant part of the American history and the visitor center is a good place to learn about it. Overall, you can spend 1 hour here and there isnt much to do except the small visitor center. I would suggest seeing this if you are in the area but I would not travel all the way to Scottsbluff just to see this.

We really enjoyed traveling along the Oregon Trail in NE. A stop at the Chimney Rock National Historic Site is worth while if you are in the area. The visitors center has a couple of nice displays and a nice gift shop. There is a small fee to visit museum, but if you only want to stop for a quick picture, you might ask if you would be allowed out on the patio to do so without paying.

You cannot go any closer to the monument than the visitor's center as it is all on private land but definitely worth the stop. Please oh PLEASE do not drive too far out of your way to see this one--but, still should be on your list if you are anywhere in the vicinity!
