Arrived in Ventura at dusk never having visited before and needing a bed for the night. Called in at a few hotels on the street (wasn't sure where we were in relation to the centre etc) most were grim and I would have slept in the car in preference. Then came across the Vagabond and the Best Western - chose the Vagabond as about 30% cheaper and Best Western slightly above my budget.
Reception very friendly, viewed all the available rooms - undecided between 2 as preferred the more expensive one, with a bit of negotiation let us have it at the lower price.
Room spacious, clean and comfortable. Parking seemed a bit conjested at times but did find a space, I think a lot of people using the attached restaurant were filling it early evening.
Decided to walk to the main street for dinner after advice from reception who were very helpful in that regard. Didn't realise until the morning how perfect the location was for the pier.
Was concerned that the trains might disturb sleep as very close to railway line but they didn't - what did was the engines of all the big boys toys at 6am - never heard poeple but did hear their trucks!
Overall reasonable value for money but recommend ear plugs for the morning

Room Tip: Take earplugs for when the workers get up and start the truck engines

We have stayed here several times and always had good experiences. It is a good basic place to stay. Stay downstairs if you can, no elevators. The attached resturant is very good and a very good value. Many locals eat here all the time. It is close to the beach too. Again, nothing fancy but a decent and safe place to stay. Parking can be a little tight.

Room Tip: Downstairs near office, Like 104 to 108 are best

We stayed at the Vagabond Inn in Ventura on Saturday, January 7, 2012. Our friends, who were traveling with pets, chose the location because of their pet-friendly policy. We did not have high expectations but were certainly pleased. We were only in town for one night and found the staff professional and friendly and very close to the bars, shops and restaurants concentrated on Main Street, which was a quick walk (2 or 3 blocks to Main St.).

The heat (floor board) worked well, we didn't detect any noise other than a passing train in the morning and the water was steaming hot! Parking seemed ample (we parked under our room on the 2nd floor) and were allowed to check in a bit early, since the room was ready.

The next time we're in Ventura (depending on the purpose), we'll certainly consider staying there again.

Room air conditioner did not cool. Wi-Fi did not function. Many parking places blocked and unuseable. Had to park far from room. Diesel engines on numerous guest pick-up trucks started revving at 6 AM. Tried to get adjustment from local manager and corporate office. No one returned my calls.
