“Best tamales in California”
Reviewed February 12, 2010

On Sun, Jan 31, my sister & I had lunch at a gourmet Mexican restaurant in Ventura. It is called Maria Bonita at 256 East Main St, [--]. We both had the tamale dinner. The tamales had a favorfull light sweet taste as did the beans and rice. There was none of the heavy cheese of the typical American-Mexican meal. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is located in Old Town Ventura across the street from the Mission.

“Really fine mole in the shade of the mission”
Reviewed August 11, 2009

Ventura is home to one of the California missions, founded in the Spanish period, called Mission San Buenaventura. Although not one of the standout missions, it is nonetheless very charming and if you are seeking a place to lunch after it, just down the street is Maria Bonita in which you will find 3 kinds of mole, all of which are superb. Mole negro, which is dark and chocolatey, may be more familiar while the other two (one of which is nearly yellow and so named amarillo) are spicier or even hot to some tastes. I found the amarillo to be excellent and would have made superb beef rub for BBQ, even. I had ordered one but being curious of the others, asked if I might have a taste of them: no problem at all. There is more to the menu than mole but seriously, the mole is a main draw here: check it out. The restaurant is neat and clean, the colors on the wall and the paintings vivid and bright, the service friendly and helpful, and the food, the main reason, is great. Worth a stop even if you are not visiting the Mission!

“AMAZING”
Reviewed May 12, 2009

This is unlike your everyday mexican food. This is southern mexican food. Lot's of different flavors and smells. You will not be disapointed by this choice. Right at the end of downtown Ventura.
