Based on favorable reviews, we really wanted to have lunch here on our way to Solvang. However we were pretty disgusted with the beat up and filthy conditions of the restaurant and chose to get back on the road!

In the past I have written glowing commentary on this well located restaurant on the Pacific Ocean, a part of the Cliff House Inn near Ventura, CA. However, my husband and I had dinner there last week and must retract our approval now. We might have been forewarned by the change of name -- it is now the "Shoals Island Grill" -- and the reconfigured and confusing new menu. Instead of a standard dinner list, it has been divided into four indeterminate categories: Tapas, Salads, Casual, and Mains. (Caveat: if you have a discount coupon to use, you must order from the Mains list for it to be valid -- as we discovered only after being presented with the check). We've always been happy with a starter that is still on the Tapas menu and still very good: the Black Local Mussels in a good white wine broth. However, several other things we tried from the Tapas, Salad, and Casual listings varied from quite ordinary to greatly deficient quality. The most unforgivably disappointing dish was billed as "Grilled Angus Ribeye Beef Skewers, Sesame-marinated, with Peanut Sauce" -- translation: dried-out overcooked chunks of nondescript beef with no hint of marinade flavoring, served with a little saucer of what seemed, in taste and consistency, to be cold peanut butter from a jar. The wait staff consisted of one overworked young woman who tried hard under trying circumstances. However she had failed to inform us when we ordered that our guest-discount restaurant certificate would not be valid unless we chose one of the six very uninteresting "Mains" listed at the end of the one-page dinner menu.
We will never go back.

The food was delicious and not overly pricey! The view was the BEST and our waitor was FABULOUS!!!! He was very good at his job and still took time to have some humor, conversation and was entertaining:)

Only fifteen minutes from Ventura, this is a great ocean front restaurant. I've ordered several items on the lunch and dinner menu, and all have been excellent, including the cheese enchiladas, the garden burger, the fish specials, the salmon, and their garlic mashed potatoes, as well as the appetizers, the creme brulee and the banana reef. I recommend them all! There is nothing better than sitting on their patio as waves crash in and dolphins cruise by.

Eating at Shoals is an escape from your everday life. The view transports you to the islands. The seagulls can be a bit aggressive but hey, that's nature! I really enjoy the steamed clams with its buttery broth infused with herbs. The French bread is there for sopping up the delicious broth. Go for lunch, have a glass of local wine and enjoy!
