“Love the Cliff House”
Reviewed May 13, 2007

My fiancee and I were in dire need of some rest and rejuvenation. We found it at the Cliff House. I was concerned by all of the bad reviews online, but we went anyway. Boy am I glad we didn't listen. We actually thought maybe people posted these reviews to keep the place a secret, beacause from the moment we arrived we were in heaven. You can't beat the view, service, and the overall feeling of this very special place. We had plans to visit Ventura and Ojai, but ended up spending the entire weekend at the Cliff House. The food in the restaurant was phenomenal and the oceanfront tables, with dolphins in full veiw, was unforgettable. I will say the inn may not be the best choice for young children, because there is no beach access, so you would have to drive to a beach. This is more for adults that want to sit and stare at the ocean and be reminded how to relax! Here's the bottom line... if you are looking for Beverly Hills luxury, go somewhere else. If you are looking for paradise, at affordable prices, compared to the rest of the oceanfront options, you will find it here.

I - along with 13 other family/friends - had dinner at the Shoals Restaurant at 5:00pm on a Sunday, where we found the food to be good (except for the rib eye), but the service barely adequate. A 20% gratuity was automatically added into the bill, and though commonplace, in general, I find it to affect service overall. The Shoals was no exception. Our order was taken in a timely fashion, drinks were delivered in a timely fashion - after the food was delivered, it was the vanishing of the servers. We were never asked if things were ok. We were offered parmigiana cheese with none delivered. We didn't get water refills. The food is high priced, but I'm sure some of that is because of the ocean-view location. We called ahead to see if we can bring a couple of birthday cakes, and were told there would be a $4.25 per person fee. An absurdly high fee
to provide some plates for us, I would say. As a result, we didn't bring the cake, and no one ordered dessert. Though splurging once in a while on a high-priced meal can be a nice experience - I left there
with a bad feeling, and will probably never go there again.

Overview: Nestled on a little slab of exclusive oceanfront real estate, this place is a Motel 6 with an uninviting unheated pool, awful beds, million dollar views, and a 5 star restaurant. Sound confusing? We paid $99 for the room so it`s hard to complain but I`m American and we do that quite well!

Positives: killer oceanfront views everywhere, free continental breakfast, checkout at Noon, no screaming kids - most guests are couples between 30-60, killer food at restaurant (but it is not cheap)..

Negatives: road and train noise is loud - the 101 freeway is 30 feet from the back of your room, one of the worst beds I`ve ever slept on - it`s never a good thing when you can feel coils jabbing your back...

Tips: get a room away from the staircases as they block your views, check their website or call for last minute deals (they can waive 2 nt requirement), insist on a room with a newer bed...

My family and I stayed for two nights in this hotel. The room was very dirty (cobwebs, stained and spliced carpet, etc.). There were wine bottles under the bed in the adjoining suite room. You could hear the freeway as if it was inside your room. The room was cold and when we asked for help or to be moved to another suite (it was a weekday and not full), the desk clerk gave us a space heater and walked away. The drafts were so strong, we tried to use our towels to block the wind from coming in. The restaurant had good food, but was not very kid-accomodating. The view from the non-freeway side was good and the pool was good; however it wasn't worth the money when you couldn't sleep due to noise, dirt, and cold.

We were surprised that if you come off highway #1 from Los Angeles, you have to cross traffic on this very busy highway to get onto the road to the hotel. That can be a tricky and dangerous experience. Next, we were surprised at how small the property was. It was charming and the food was excellent at the hotel. The staff was friendly and accommodating. However, this hotel needs to be repainted inside and out. I would also replace the bedspreads with new and brighter hawaiian material. Most of all, repaint the bottom of the pool and clean it more often due to the location. Place a more elegant sign at the entrance. The view was spectacular and though it wasn't a bad experience, for the price, we would not stay here again. You can only live so long on reputation of what once was.

In short, the website is misleading. The pictures of the outside restaurant setting surronds the pool. Also, the rooms are directly above the restaraunt eating. As a result, the area is very compact, noisy and unromantic.

Look for the ugly, noisy ventilation duct sticking out from the second floor, which is where our room was located.

We left the hotel and went to Santa Barbara even though management refused to refund our fee.

Forget this place!
