Dirty not kept up

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 8, 2019
The staff is nice but the place is dirty not well kept up at all. From moldy hand rails . Dirty tables at there over priced restraunt ($200). All of the cushions on the beach chairs we're just gross (dirty, bird poop etc.) Windows don't lock spiders everywhere. Yes check out those back windows. If you you can deal with that. The view is awesome!

I stayed at this property for two nights on a mini-vacation. Based on previous reviews of the rooms, I was a little hesitant but I found my room to be a nice size, clean with a comfy bed, a nice table which gave a view of the ocean, chest of drawers, room on the counter for my cosmetics. There was only a shower, and not very large, but it worked fine and was clean. I would compare it to European boutique hotels. I stayed at the property for 2 1/2 days and had all my meals there. The restaurant has very good food for lunch and dinner; breakfast is basic but filling. Sitting by the pool and watching (and hearing) the ocean is a delight. Note that I did not see anyone go down on the beach so not sure if that is possible. If eating outside, you do have to watch out for the pesky seagull.

Room tip: Rooms on the ends (4 of them) are slightly larger with small patios; cost more.

I found bedbugs in our room around 11pm on our first night. I showed photos to the clerk, who claimed that there had never been bedbugs reported in the history of the hotel. I asked for different accommodations, and was told that the whole hotel was booked, and that the owner was unwilling to put us up in a different hotel or pay the difference between what we were paying at Cliff House and what the alternate hotel they suggested we try was charging for a comparable room. I had to pack up my kids in the middle of the night and drive an hour and a half. The clerk acted like they were doing us a huge favor by refunding our money, since we couldn’t stay in the room with bedbugs.

Bed bugs are a very serious issue in our industry today. This is not a subject to be taken lightly and one that is acted on immediately. Although we have our hotel inspected regularly for any evidence of bed bugs, we also follow up immediately on any guest concern. In the case of this guest our contracted pest control provider was on site within hours of the alleged report. The pest control company did a thorough inspection of the room, as did myself and staff, and found no evidence of any stage of a bed bug. We also took other very serious countermeasures, just in case, to curtail any possibility of a continued issue.
Thankfully, your room was sold almost every day since your review and no further reports of this issue.

We appreciate and are thankful for the concern and awareness of our travelers which would enable us to eliminate a problem immediately should it arise.

We will continue to immediately act on even the slightest concern of any of our guests in this serious matter. We will also continue to support the findings of the professionals we hire to handle any pest control situations.

We deeply apologize for any perceived or real attitude at issue by our staff. As we have not had any reports prior or after your review, our desk person did not know how to properly respond to your complaint. We have since used this as a learning moment to help staff be more prepared. We were sold out that night and all guests were occupying rooms the rooms so there was no room to move you do. We did research alternative properties and I found one with a similar price 15-minutes away.

Should you have any further comments or concerns, you are welcome to get in touch with me: Sandy Porter, GM 805-652-1381, email: sandy@cliffhouseinn.com.

I was traveling cross-country by motorcycle, and the Cliff House Inn was my final stop going coast to coast.
I’d read reviews saying that the front desk people were snooty which I found totally not to be the case. The gentleman who checked me in was very interested in my trip and I even showed him some pictures.

My room was on the second floor with beautiful views of the water.
It is not an “updated” inn, but I knew that before I arrived. The room was comfortable, and my only thought was that a ceiling fan might be a great addition to the rooms during the shoulder season.

That evening I dined at the restaurant on site, and the food was awesome. The continental breakfast in the morning was adequate not great, but I did just fine. If you’re looking for a low-key and fun place to stay this place fits the bill.

If I am in Ventura again I would certainly stay here. Did I say that the view was awesome!

The hotel is directly on the ocean, not beach. There is no direct beach access. It is rundown, in need of repairs and upgrades. The furniture is "set by the curb, free." That is, it is dated, broken and dirty. The TP is single ply needing twice as much to use. I was charged for 3 nights but only reserved and stayed two nights. Reception is non-existent. The food at the onsite Restaurant, The Shoals is good, but not really what one would expect from a beach hotel. It seemed "canned" instead of homemade. Phone calls are not answered and the "voice mail" is full. The breakfast is cheap at best. Location is great, but the place is dated, poorly maintained and lacks customer service. Stay elsewhere.

Room tip: Rooms facing the ocean and not the freeway are best.

The photos do not exaggerate the gorgeous location of this hotel. It's right on the beach. Although you have to walk a block or two to get to the sandy part. All the rooms have ocean views. And although the hotel is also just barely off the 101, once you enter, you'd never know. The on-sight restaurant is very good. The room was clean and a bit shabby. It could use some updating. But then I'm sure the price would go up from the $200/night that we paid. We'd definitely go back.
