“Wonderful BBQ Brisket”
Reviewed April 9, 2012

This was a favorite restaurant of friends who lived in El Paso 50 yrs. ago. The beef brisket was fabulous with a spicy bbq sauce that you add yourself. There are old style booths - nothing fancy but the food is worth the hard seats. Will definitely return.

“Savory sumptiousness at Smitty's!”
Reviewed February 11, 2012

My wife had a Groupon for Smitty's and it would have been a good deal even if the food wasn't good. However, the lean beef sandwiches were superb; I especially like it stuffed with the dill chips and squeezed the sauce between the multiple layers of meat. The sauce was vinegary; the German potato was salty with it's skin on and crunchy; and the hint of pineapple sweetened the cole slaw. However, the tastiest for me was the appetizer: sausage with green chile & swiss cheese; it had the perfect amount of crustiness and salt. The waitress and food servers were enthusiastic, and that '50s-'60s-'70s ambiance was updated with a digital jukebox on the wall. The real jukebox would really class the place up (or down?) but, of course, it would take up too much room. Instead, there are several flat-screens hanging on the wall, with a few vintage paintings/pencil&paper drawings/community support of the local high school state champion baseball team. The only thing I thought missing were rolls of paper towels for the anticipated BBQ mess that comes with these great eateries, but our limited dishes didn't lend toward messy fingers. We enjoyed this night out, and I think everybody would do so, too.

“Hole-in-the-wall restaurant with great BBQ”
Reviewed June 12, 2010

The dining area at Smitty's is not much to brag about. It is old and has a dive bar feeling. I do think that it suites it well though. The food is great and comes out fast. Both the brisket and pulled pork were tender and came with a nice sauce. They have great beer specials and the staff is very friendly too. I will most definitely eat here again when I return to El Paso.

“No frills but tasty BBQ”
Reviewed November 21, 2009

Eaten here a couple of times, the food is tasty without any frills for atmosphere.
Basic hard laminate seating, nothing special in the beer selection.
A couple of OK sauces to go along with the meat.

“Very Tasty Barbecue in a Good Atmosphere”
Reviewed January 5, 2008

Smitty's has been open since 1955, and they seem to have retained a lot of that old charm in the atmosphere and the menu.

We ordered two of the 2-meat plates, with sliced pork, corned beef, pork ribs and hot links. The hot links are very spicy jalapeño-infused sausages not for the faint of heart. The corned beef was a standout -- smokey and tender and delicious. The sliced pork was a little dry.

The meat is served without sauce. You use a squeeze bottle to add as much as you want. The plates come with beans and cole slaw and some fried potato wedges, along with some slices of white bread. You won't be hungry when you're done with all that.

Smitty's also has a full bar with several beers on tap, including some good ones like Fat Tire. The staff was very cheery and service was quick.

The editors of RoadFood.com call Smitty's the best place to go in El Paso for barbecue, and I can believe that they are correct, because Smitty's gets the whole dining experience just about right.
