Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: This National Park Service site encompasses the campus, but Central High is still an active high school. Visitors should park and begin their visit at the National Park Visitor Center, located diagonally across from the campus, at 2120 W. Daisy Gatson Bates Drive. Visitor entrance into the school is via free Ranger-led tours, which need to be reserved in advance to guarantee participation. Interpreting the Civil Rights Movement with an emphasis on school integration, this National Historic Site focuses on the 1957 desegregation crisis that resulted when Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus ordered National Guard troops to prevent the first African American students, "The Little Rock Nine," from entering formerly all white Little Rock Central High School, leading to federal intervention by order of President Dwight Eisenhower.

I drove to LR and it was a good thing I had my car to come visit the Central High Museum. The museum itself is across from the school, but you get a good timeline of the events before, during and after the events of the Little Rock 9. The rangers also do a small tour/info session about how the events unfolded which is also appreciated.

Even though this is during a hard part of US history, this is a good place to come and visit. It's free and a must see

We visited on a Sunday afternoon and therefore didn't get to take the tour. We were able to walk around the outside of the building. The Visitor Center across the street has interactive displays. It was a great history lesson for several generations of our family visiting that day. It was eye opening for our teenagers and elicitted great conversations with their grandparents who were visiting the site with us and had lived through that era. The National Park rangers at the Visitor Center were very helpful and were willing to take the time to tell us additional stories. I highly recommend this site for families, History comes alive and it is sobering.

Free to visit - a great part of history that we all should know about. The high school itself is closed to the public, but it is an impressive structure itself!

The tour guide was informative, but unfortunately we were unable to go inside Central because of the weekend

This is a small museum, but so very interesting. Take time to watch the movie and the video news clips. Otherwise, you won't appreciate the history lesson it provides.
