Owner description: Built in 1776 and located at Cunningham Falls State Park, this was the first iron furnace constructed in rural Frederick County.

Self guided tour of furnace. Elevated walkway at house ruins associated with furnace is blocked off, fence around top of stonework missing railing. I agree in the fall it must be pretty, but it appears the grounds are not being adequately maintained. Maybe just too early in the year. Bugs were thick when we visited on 4/14/12.

Love this place especially in the fall. The foliage and the smell of the woods welcomes you. Bring a picnic and enjoy the outdoor experience with your loved one or your family.

An interesting 15 minute stop on the way to the Cunningham Falls. A few historic plaques to read by the parents, a bit of lawn for the kids to run on. A bit of the history of the area, and underscores how hard life was back then.

This is a old building - nothing much to enjoy. You can plan a 10 min visit to the historic furnance.

My family and I drove up and stopped off at Catoctin Furnace, today. Its a quite little area, great to stretch your legs. We took pictures, and got an unexpected surprise. It was great.
