Beyond the grand entrance lobby is a hotel charging premium prices for a dated and average hotel. The room was so poor I had to speak with a manager as bathroom door didn't shut, air con and heating from the 70's, no kettle or coffee pot. They took the room out of service and upgraded us to a suite which compensated. A coffee machine but no tea or kettle or replacement coffee when used up, Shabby decor and
dying on its feet. Needs a major overhaul at these prices

Was a bit cautious after booking this hotel and reading the reviews but we need not of worried. From check in to check out and everything else in-between the staff were professional, pleasant and courteous. The rooms were tired but clean and yes you could here noise from the street below but hey your in NEW YORK CITY!!!!! The concierge (think his name was Bill ) was amazing - knew all the shows inside out and got us some great seats! They new the city well and were extremely helpful. The hotel was in an excellent location we walked to Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park and everywhere in-between, you are also a stones throw from Central Station and the Airport Shuttle Bus. I would definitely stay here again!

I've stayed here twice with mixed feelings. Bottom line is I will stay again when the group I come with yearly does. Great location, and comfortable beds, stunning historic lobby and Starbucks in the lobby are all plusses. The prices, when coming with a group are a good value. Downside is no 24 hour room service, some of the rooms are sub par (but you can ask to be changed, I'm guessing they are in process of refurbishing) and no coffee available early in the morning, nor is there any way to make it in your room, nor a refrigerator. Not so great for international travelers because of this, we are not all on NYC time! Bathroom needed refurbishing. There is a large buffet breakfast available and if you are a big eater it's a decent value but not great. I found the interactive TV that you have to use to get room service has an annoying and unnecessarily difficult interface, and I'm something of a computer geek. The room service food, however, while pricey was excellent. So... a mixed bag. But will stay again. I come with a group yearly and it's okay. They really need 24 hour access to food and particularly coffee, though.

I have stayed at the Roosevelt several times over the years and everytime I promis myself that I will not stay here in the future. But then you check it out on the web and they are launching renovation programs every now and then so I get convinced that the next time everything will be so much better. But no (or I´m just super unlucky and end up in the non-renovated parts of the hotel every time)
The lobby is grand and super impressive! The check-in is a test of your patience but when you finally get up to the counter everything is fast and correct. Elevators takes forever to pick you up and are worn down and clammy. And then the rooms. We stayed halfways up the building but the room was so small that I had to enter first, pushing my suitcase infront of me and then jolting it over the bed and standing in the bed unpacking our clothes into the wardrobe. THEN I could go and let my wife in...Simply because the room was so tiny and ill-furnished. Not something you expect when you pay the price they are asking.
The room itself felt outdated, worn down and just plain tired. The furnitur was chipped and stained and the wardrobe/TV cabinett was something from a IKEA warehouse but with a previous owner.
The last worrying fact is that we were going to attend a show at the hotel with a world famous magician. Just to absolutely sure that we would make it on time if the location was at the other end of the establishment, i asked the concierge who had absolutely "NO IDEA". "Can you ask somebody maybe?" I said... "No, but I can call you a taxi"...

Thank you for your comments and review. Our apologies for any issues you experienced during your most recent stay. All of your concerns have been noted and will be immediately addressed. Regarding room size, most guest rooms in NYC tend to be on the cozy side regardless of price especially when compared to other major cities or ones own home. Again our apologies and thanks for your feedback.

I would highly recommend this hotel. As you walk into the foyer you get a taste of art deco glamour and you feel spoiled immediately.
Location was great, being less than a 10 minute walk from Times Square and other attractions including Grand Central Station.
Rooms were a good size and nice and clean.
Staff (especially room cleaning staff) were friendly and polite.
Staff dealt quickly with a problem we had one night (toilet overflowed with clean water), they sent maintenance and cleaning staff up very quickly and solved the problem/cleaned up straight away.
This is the third hotel I have stayed in in New York and although I had no problems with the other two, this is the one I would book again.

The hotel is in an excellent location, close to Grand Central station and other attractions.
The first room we had was damp smelling so we asked to change and we were offered a much better one. The decor was on the tired side but was clean and always had fresh towels and plenty of hot water. The breakfast was very good with excellent staff, but the cafe opposite was also good and much cheaper.
We will return, but when it's warmer !!! Would recommend this hotel to couples and families alike.
